Invasive Species Technician

PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Invasive Species Technicians will work closely with the Midwestern Ontario Program Director, Invasive Species Program Director and subregional staff to implement a landscape scale invasive control program across the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula Natural Area. The project will be focused on identifying and controlling populations of Phragmites, Dog-strangling Vine, Garlic Mustard, and Common Buckthorn across private and public land in partnership with local partners and communities. The Invasive Species Technicians will assist in the implementation of the stewardship and management program for significant natural lands across the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula by working closely with NCC staff, partner organizations, local stewards and volunteers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with completing surveys and the associated data collection for priority invasive species on public and private land across the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula;
- Assist with implementing invasive species management activities in priority areas as identified by the Invasive Species Program Coordinator and Midwestern Ontario Program Director using appropriate control methods;
- Assist with developing and writing management plans, volunteer engagement strategies, and effectiveness monitoring reports;
- Assist with data collection, data entry, analysis and reporting as required to inform the invasive species management plan for the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula;
- Assist with organizing and implementing volunteer programs and events associated with invasive species control.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
- Demonstrated interest in conservation issues in Ontario;
- Experience/knowledge in collecting and compiling information on natural areas, including natural features, threats etc.;
- Ability to identify common Ontario plants, wildlife and vegetation communities as well as experience using dichotomous identification keys;
- Ability to identify priority invasive species (Phragmites, Garlic Mustard, Dog-strangling Vine, Common Buckthorn);
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Highly motivated, analytical and detail oriented; creative, pro-active thinker;
- Ability to work well within team structure;
- Experience working with volunteers;
- Proficient with word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet software;
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g. high summer temperatures and humidity, heavy rain) and on various terrain;
- Ability to carry heavy equipment for long hours over rough terrain, often off trail in remote areas;
- Navigational skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and air photo interpretation;
- Valid class “G” driver’s license and ability to rent a vehicle in Ontario.
The following additional skills and abilities would be assets in these positions:
- Pesticide exterminator license;
- Standard First Aid – Level C CPR certification;
- Experience using chainsaws, brush cutters, farm utility vehicles, power tools, lawn tractors and other mechanized stewardship equipment; experience driving pick up trucks and utility trailers.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
These are full-time positions within the period of Monday July 6, 2020 – Friday October 30, 2020.
Positions are based on the northern Bruce Peninsula.
