Geographic Information System Technician

PURPOSE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician will work closely with the GIS Coordinators and GIS Assistant to support Ontario conservation initiatives. The GIS Technician will assist with a diversity of mapping and data management and quality control tasks, including creating, editing and manipulating spatial data (i.e. anthropogenic features, species at risk or non-native invasive species data), reconciling NCC’s geodatabases and Land Resource Management (LRM) database, and creating maps for various internal and public reports and documents.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Entering data into NCC’s Land Resource Management (LRM) database and geodatabases and providing regular reporting on data entry and management progress to the GIS Coordinator and assistants;
• Editing and manipulating spatial data;
• Identifying and resolving questions, inconsistencies, or missing information in the geodatabase and providing recommendations to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future;
• Supporting NCC staff by creating maps that meet detailed specifications;
• Responding to any spatial queries from NCC staff.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:
• Proficient with ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcMap), including experience with data creation, editing, and querying;
• Proficient with Microsoft office (Excel, Word);
• Demonstrated experience managing large data sets and/or prior experience with data conversion/migration projects;
• Education or previous work experience related to geomatics;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Highly motivated, analytical and detail oriented;
• Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
The following additional skills and abilities would be assets in these positions:
• An interest in conservation and education/work experience in natural sciences, environmental studies, or similar fields.
Terms of Employment:
• Full-time position must start on January 31st, 2022 until September 30, 2022;
• This position is office-based and will be completed in a work from home setting. The use of an NCC office will be dependent on COVID-19 safety guidance and best practices;
• Compensation: $17.50/hr;
• The position will be partially funded by the Clean Foundation’s Science Horizon’s program. Applicants are required to meet the following criteria (link to Clean Foundation Science Horizons Intern Registration);
o Must be no more than 30 years of age at the start of employment;
o Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or a person who has been granted Refugee status in Canada;
o Must have graduated from a post-secondary program;
o Must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance during the internship; and
o Must not currently be working for the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
