Part-Time Environmental Education Instructor
The Riverwood Conservancy is looking for a Part-Time Environmental Education Instructor. The successful candidate will teach Education Naturally (K-8) and LEADS (9-12), our school, curriculum-linked, outdoor and virtual education programs.
Reporting to the Education Program Manager, the successful candidates will be responsible for delivering programs to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
The instructor supervises volunteers, Co-op Students and University Interns from diverse backgrounds that support Education Naturally and LEADS programs. They liaise with the Education Naturally Teacher or Education Program Manager on all volunteer matters.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of the Ontario Science curriculum, Ontario natural history, science methodology and appropriate teaching pedagogy. The candidate will possess demonstrable teaching skills, strong class management skills, proven dedication to inclusiveness and diversity, experience delivering programs virtually and outdoors, and a strong work ethic.
Position primary responsibilities:
Deliver Education Naturally elementary (K-8) field science programs that reflect current Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education guidelines;
Deliver secondary school L.E.A.D.S. programs (9-12) that reflect current Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education guidelines;
Deliver in-person and virtual programs;
Provide program equipment set up and clean up and report program statistics;
Supervise and direct volunteers supporting the Education programs;
· Follow health and safety protocols for virtual programs and in-person programs in a busy public park;
· For programs at Riverwood, maintain program equipment and assist with classroom animal care;
· Perform other duties as assigned and as agreed upon.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
· A current Ontario Certified Teacher certificate is preferred;
Experience as an outdoor education teacher or similar field;
A degree in science (preference biology/ecology/environmental science) or similar;
A working knowledge of Ontario Provincial Ministry of Education Science Guidelines and curriculum;
Knowledge of local flora and fauna;
Experience with aquariums an asset;
Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to fostering equity and inclusiveness in program delivery and in the workplace;
A strong sense of health and safety;
Experience and willingness to work with volunteers;
A flexible and adaptable approach to program delivery;
Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills;
A state of health that allows you to safely lead classes over uneven and hilly terrain and under a variety of weather conditions in all seasons;
Current Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check: this is required prior to starting
· CPR-C Certified: this is required
Compensation is $26.67/hour. Hours per week will vary depending on program demand, starting at a minimum of 15 hours per week and going up to 30 hours per week or more during periods of higher demand. Contract period is from the September start date until December 20, 2022.
Duties are to commence as soon as possible.
