Crew Leader, Ecosystem Management – Short-Term Contract Position
POSITION OVERVIE:

Contract Duration: April 1 – June 28 with possibility of extension
To provide crew leadership and specific skilled labour support in a dynamic team environment with the implementation of Restoration Projects tree and shrub planting program. Candidates will lead planting and site preparation crews and will actively participate in the safe operation and maintenance of a range of required tools and equipment. Candidates will demonstrate the relevant skills, techniques, and best management practices for site preparations, tree planting, and post planting maintenance. Candidates will be exposed to various restoration construction projects including forests, wetlands, stream restoration, shoreline enhancements, and meadows. Occupational health and safety is a major responsibility of this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform the following tasks under general supervision:
Provide crew leadership and actively participate in the implementation of habitat restoration projects focusing on terrestrial and riparian plantings as well as pre-planting site preparations.
Operate and maintain assigned tools and equipment safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved project design and details.
Perform daily vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure safe operation.
Complete daily work reports and project information records as assigned.
Assist with the supervision, training, and motivation of junior staff in compliance with the TRCA Health and Safety Policies as well as all relevant Federal, Provincial, and Municipal legislation and regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Post-secondary education in ecological restoration, biology, environmental science, resource management or a related field.
Minimum one (1) to two (2) years of experience in ecological restoration, horticulture, or commercial landscaping; three (3) or more years’ experience preferred.
One (1) or more years of supervisory experience an asset.
Valid Ontario G Class driver’s license. Class A (R) license / trailer experience an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proficient knowledge of southern Ontario’s aquatic, riparian, and terrestrial ecosystems.
Demonstrated knowledge of native plants and their habitats, with proficient plant identification skills.
Demonstrated experience in the safe operation of motorized utility vehicles.
Familiarity with farm and construction equipment, including tractors and implements an asset.
Demonstrated aptitude to work outdoors in adverse conditions.
Standard First Aid an asset.
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
