Program Description:
Are you a newcomer to Canada and interested in a career in the environmental sector?
TRCA’s NEWCOMER YOUTHGREEN ECONOMY PROJECT IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!
The Newcomer Youth Green Economy Project is a free program offered by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority for youth aged 18-29 interested in learning more about green careers, making industry connections, receiving career mentoring, and participating in a real world project to add to their resume!
Throughout the five-month part-time program, participants will have access to learning opportunities in a variety of environmental career pathways, including water management, environmental education, green energy / green building, and ecological restoration.
Program Components:
- Experiential learning professional project placement
- Job search and corporate culture training
- Online training
- Virtual and in-person field trips

Qualifications:
- Must be 18-29 years of age
- Interested in learning about careers in the environmental sector / gaining environmental career experience
- Must be a newcomer to Canada (less than 10 years) / any of the following:
- A permanent resident of Canada
- Conditionally approved for permanent residence
- A protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA)
- A convention refugee selected for resettlement in Canada by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
- A person who entered Canada through the Live-in Caregiver Program and holds or has received approval for a work permit under section 112 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act OR has received approval for permanent residence
- A Ukrainian temporary resident and/or dependent of such (eligible until March 31, 2023)

Funding:
NYGEP is funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada and helps to support newcomer youth interested in careers in the environmental sector by providing access to online and experiential learning opportunities and job skills training.
Pathways:
Throughout the five-month part-time program, participants will have access to learning opportunities in the following environmental career pathways:
- Ecological Restoration
- Water Management
- Green Energy / Green Building
- Environmental Education
Professional Project Placements:
Participants will be placed with a host employer in one of the four environmental career pathways (see above) for an experiential learning opportunity. The host employer will provide a mentor who will guide a group of participants (per career pathway) through completion of a real-world project.
Job Search & Corporate Culture Training:
Eight half-day workshops in which you will learn about corporate culture and job search skills in the environmental sector. You will prepare your resume, perfect your interview skills, and practice networking. Training is delivered one Saturday per week over the first two months of the program.
Online Training:
Participants will receive 10 hours of TRCA online training on job search, corporate culture, and communication. Topics include:
- Occupational and labour market research
- Resume and cover letter formatting and targeting
- Making a good first impression
- Networking
- Teamwork
- Interview / presentation skills
- Performance management
