Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas Logistics Manager
Birds Canada is seeking a motived, organized individual to help coordinate volunteers and field efforts for the Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas in a part-time capacity for 12 weeks beginning May 15th, 2023.
The Newfoundland Breeding Bird Atlas is a 5-year project to map the distribution and abundance of all birds breeding on the island of Newfoundland. The island has been divided into 1,485 10 km by 10 km squares, which are systematically surveyed by volunteers and Atlas staff. To learn more about the Newfoundland Atlas, visit our website at www.nf.birdatlas.ca.
The logistics manager will work part time (10-15 hours/week) to help the Atlas Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator manage volunteer atlassers during the peak data collection season (May through July). They will help to identify priority locations for volunteers to conduct surveys, ensure atlas data collection efforts are not duplicated, communicate with volunteers, Regional Coordinators, and the Atlas Office to coordinate surveys, and aid in distributing equipment for loan.
Because the logistics manager will remain in the office while the Atlas team is in the field, ability to work independently is essential. The logistics manager will work from home and will be responsible for providing their own workspace. This position reports to the Newfoundland Atlas Coordinator (Catherine Dale).

- Ability to work and make decisions independently
- Strong organizational abilities
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills

Additional asset skills and experience:
- Familiarity with Newfoundland geography, ecosystems, and bird species
Salary: $15.50 – $17.00 per hour, depending on experience and funding.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitoring Atlas e-mail account and responding to e-mail and phone messages from volunteers
- Monitoring Atlas social media, responding to comments, and posting updates
- Communicating regularly with Regional Coordinators and the Atlas field team
- Helping volunteers (particularly those from out of province) find locations to collect Atlas data which will provide maximum benefit for the project
- Helping volunteers navigate survey protocols, NatureCounts app, and data entry system
- Helping to coordinate logistics for remote fieldwork (e.g., remaining in contact with transportation providers, providing safety check-in for field teams, etc.)
