Overview
The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is currently accepting applications for the full-time (37.5 hours/week) position of Water Resources Specialist or Water Resources Engineer.
Reporting to the Flood Forecasting Supervisor, this position plays a key role in the development, operation, and maintenance of MVCA’s hydrologic data systems, including the Authority’s Kisters WISKI hydrometric database.
The successful candidate will work within a small technical team responsible for hydrologic monitoring, flood forecasting, hydrologic modeling, and watershed data management across the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds.
A major component of this role will be the management and ongoing development of MVCA’s WISKI system, including hydrometric data processing, quality control, and supporting staff use of the system for operational and analytical purposes.
Location: Maitland Conservation Administration Office in Wroxeter, ON and throughout the watershed
Key Responsibilities:
1. Hydrologic Data Systems (WISKI)
- Responsible for the development, configuration, and maintenance of MVCA’s Kisters WISKI database.
- Manage the collection, processing, and quality control of hydrometric and climate data from MVCA monitoring stations.
- Support staff across departments in the use and interpretation of WISKI data.
- Assist with the integration of telemetry systems, data feeds, and automated data processing tools.
- Support the ongoing improvement and modernization of MVCA’s hydrologic data infrastructure.
2. Flood Forecasting and Operations
- Assist with delivering the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.
- Monitor watershed conditions, weather forecasts, and hydrometric data.
- Serve in the Flood Duty Officer rotation, including occasional evening, overnight, and weekend monitoring.
- Assist with the preparation and issuance of flood messages and watershed condition statements.
- Provide technical support to municipal emergency personnel during flood events.
- Assist with development, maintenance, and application of hydrologic and hydraulic models used for flood forecasting and watershed analysis.
3. Hydrometric Monitoring Network
- Assist with the operation and maintenance of MVCA’s hydrometric monitoring network, including precipitation and streamflow gauges.
- Support data quality assurance and field verification activities.
- Assist with troubleshooting monitoring equipment and telemetry systems.
- Participate in the snow survey program and other watershed monitoring initiatives.
- Conduct hydrometric field work and equipment maintenance as required.
4. Municipal and Program Support
- Provide technical support to municipal flood emergency planning and response activities.
- Assist with development and delivery of municipal flood response exercises.
- Prepare technical reports, briefing materials, and Board reports as required.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, and training related to water resources and flood forecasting.
5. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 1-4 years of directly related experience. MVCA will consider candidates with a range of experience levels.
1. Education
Degree in one of the following fields:
- Civil Engineering
- Water Resources Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Hydrology
- ·Environmental Science
· Geography or Earth Science with a focus on water resources
2. Professional Designation or Advanced Education (preferred but not required)
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
or equivalent professional experience in water resources. - Graduate degree
3. Experience and Skills
- Experience working with hydrologic or environmental data systems
- Experience with Kisters WISKI or similar hydrometric data management systems is a strong asset
- Experience with hydrologic or hydraulic modeling tools such as HEC-HMS or HEC-RAS is an asset
- Strong data analysis and database management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general data analysis tools
- Familiarity with GIS software (ArcGIS or similar) is considered an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
4. Other Requirements
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license
- Ability to conduct field work in varying weather and environmental conditions
- Ability to work independently and within a small team environment
- Ability to participate in flood event response outside normal working hours
Position Details:
Anticipated Start Date: May 18, 2026
Salary: $39.13-$45.07 per hour plus comprehensive benefits package and OMERS benefit pension plan
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Some evening and weekend hours may be required during flood events or operational activities.
