Position Title: Forestry Conservation Technician

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Position Summary:

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is looking to add to their team, a Forestry Conservation Technician. The successful candidate will work as part of a team to complete spring tree planting operations on private and Authority lands, will assist with maintenance of restoration sites, control of invasive species, forest management, and planning of afforestation projects.

This position is open due to an existing role becoming vacant.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Undertake technical aspects of the delivery and promotion of Conservation Services programs
  • Plan and execute activities, including engaging with landowners for best management practices, project development/implementation, invasive species removal, habitat restoration, forest management, and plant identification
  • Provide forestry expertise to other Authority departments and the public as required
  • Provide landowner services regarding the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program, forest management, tree marking, tree planting, and herbicide tending
  • Use GPS equipment to map and locate items related to projects
  • Maintain accurate and concise records of work completed for report writing and fees for service
  • Evaluate project success, write reports, map location,s and develop/review best management practices
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Credentials and Experience:

  • Possess a post-secondary education in forestry or related natural resources field
  • Minimum 3 years of field experience in the Environmental, Forestry or Nursery sector
  • Exterminator Pesticide licence or technician licence or the ability to obtain an Exterminator licence within a year
  • Certified Ontario Tree Marker certificate or experience tree marking
  • Experience in forest management and writing management plans (MFTIP)
  • Experience in conservation and restoration project implementation
  • Working knowledge of stewardship, ecosystem restoration, agricultural soil and water conservation practices
  • Aptitude with flora and fauna species identification of native and invasive species
  • Certified Seed Collector or an interest in collecting native tree seed
  • RX100 Low Complexity Prescribed Burn Worker certification
  • Certified Chainsaw certification
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite programs
  • Experience and knowledge in the use and application of GIS and GPS systems
  • Basic knowledge of legislation and policies and procedures related to the workplace environment
  • Well-developed communication skills, including drafting and editing written material and articulating ideas clearly and concisely to various audiences
  • Self motivated and able to work with minimal supervision with the capability to balance competing priorities and manage inexplicit situations
  • Ability to work in a team environment, leading staff and supervising contract staff to ensure work is completed in safe manner
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience operating and maintaining related equipment (RTV, Tractor, Mowers, Chainsaw, Brushsaws, Pumps and Small Engines)
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions and on varying terrain
  • Ability to lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 75 lbs. (35 kg)

  • Physical Demands (heavy lifting, walking long distances carrying equipment)
  • Potential Hazards (felling trees, equipment operation, working at heights, exposure to herbicides)
  • Physical Environment (temperature extremes, exposure to weather, noise levels from equipment, working on uneven ground, working in woodlots)
  • Work Schedule (Monday to Friday, occasional extra hours to complete projects and weekends for community events)
  • Rapidly changing duties (maintenance, contractor communications, administrative & staff supervision)
