Norfolk County is seeking to fill numerous forestry summer students positions.

Seeking individuals who are interested in working within the community of Norfolk County to help manage and promote the County’s forest and urban forest resources. This position is designed to expose local youth to the diversity of environmentally based career opportunities found across Norfolk.

  • The successful incumbents will:
    Assist in tree planting; urban tree/woodland inventory; stream restoration; electrofishing; invasive species control; nursery/trail maintenance, and other forestry, urban forestry or natural resource based duties
  • Assist in the watering, pruning, planting, and mulching of young trees on a scheduled basis.
  • Assist the Forest By-law Officer and Arborist in their duties including completion of tree risk assessments and timber harvest inspections
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and reporting defects to the immediate supervisor
  • Maintain daily activity log
  • Operate a variety of equipment, light duty vehicles, machine and power and hand held tools, (i.e. brush hogs, hand held saws, weed eaters).

Qualifications:
• College or university education with a preference given to candidates that have completed a minimum of 1 year studies in Arboriculture, Horticulture Technician, Environmental Studies/Sciences, Landscape Design/Architecture, Forestry Technician or Urban Forestry
• Understanding and entry level experience with the use of GPS / GIS technology and applications
• Must have Class G Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle including the ability to provide a drivers abstract when requested during the recruitment process
• Previous work experience in landscaping, forestry, urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, farming or other related experience is preferred
• Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability and willingness to work in varying climate conditions
• Able to lift 30 lbs to 50 lbs
• Excellent customer service and time management skills
• Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
• Standard First Aid with CPR Level C
• Tree identification
• Chainsaw safety training
• Knowledge of tree planting practices
• Knowledge of common restoration practices
• Forest entomology / forest disease identification
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Good time management, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
• Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision and follow all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
• Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
• Laboring duties include climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, handling materials in order to accomplish management objectives of Norfolk County and partner organizations. You will be required to work in an outdoor environment.
• Computer expertise with preference given to students with knowledge of corporate standard software (Microsoft Office)
• Must have green patch CSA approved safety boots, 6” – 8” to cover ankle, suede or leather

Duration:

The duration of this contract will be approximately 4 months.  Applicants are expected to fulfill the entire contract period commencing April 29, 2026, until September 4, 2026.

Note:

Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.

At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.

Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.
