ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, Watershed Monitoring, this position will lead the collection, summary, and management of forest and wetland vegetation data for CVC’s Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP) and other watershed monitoring initiatives. In addition, the successful candidate will assist with data collection, management, compilation, analysis, and reporting of related abiotic and biotic monitoring data.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science, specializing in Ecology, Zoology, Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related subject; a Master of Science would be an asset; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience related to major tasks.
Excellent vascular plant identification skills including trees, shrubs, forbs, grasses and sedges. - Experience with and/or knowledge of standardized vegetation sampling protocols.
- Extensive field work experience and required ability to work under adverse environmental conditions (e.g. biting insects, heat, rain, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, with strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
- Proven technical writing skills (examples will be required if an interview is granted), with experience using Microsoft Office Suite Software (Word, Excel, Access).
- Demonstrated experience with data entry and other components of information management.
- Demonstrated knowledge of data summarization skills; knowledge of statistical analysis principles, techniques and software packages (e.g. ‘R’) is an asset.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license in good standing
- Successful candidate will provide a current MTO driver’s abstract
- Certified arborist designation, or ability to obtain designation, an asset.
- Familiarity with southern Ontario Ecological Land Classification (ELC) and the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) an asset.
- Certification in First Aid is considered an asset.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
Field Data Collection
- Conduct field work for approximately 5 months using standardized methodologies, leading the collection of forest and wetland vegetation and tree health surveys as well as contributing to restoration monitoring and other special projects.
- Support other components of the monitoring program where necessary (e.g. fish, water quality, benthos).
- Conduct pre-monitoring activities such as equipment preparation and maintenance, scheduling, and other logistics.
- Supervise, train and evaluate staff, volunteers and interns as necessary
Information Management
- Lead and conduct data entry and quality control of vegetation and tree health monitoring data.
- Maintain and organize physical and electronic data sheets and associated files.
Data Reporting and Analysis
- Lead summarization of forest and wetland vegetation and tree health monitoring data.
- Prepare sections of annual reports, monitoring protocols and other documents as needed.
- Research and share information (i.e. report or presentation) on monitoring protocols and topics relevant to the ecology of forest and wetland communities; adjust style based on audience.
- Support statistical analysis and reporting as required.
