Salary: Starting salary at $25/hr, based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will commensurate with each individual’s education and/or experience as it relates to the position.

What You Will Do

DUC in Williams Lake is seeking a team-oriented individual to work alongside DUC conservation staff, to assist with managing and maintaining wetland habitats throughout the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of BC. The successful candidate will work with local Williams Lake staff to carefully plan and execute field site visits to carry out habitat management activities at DUC wetlands in the region. This work will require safety protocols to be upheld and best judgement to be used.

Effective communication, organization, problem solving skills, and the ability to build strong working relationships to coordinate with multiple staff, will be key to the successful completion of this position. Past experience scheduling teams and equipment, and prioritizing field tasks, will be an asset to the successful applicant.

This is beautiful, wild country, and you will be working outdoors in remote areas, often outside of cell phone range, which will require skills in backroads navigation and the ability to problem solve as conditions change.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in overall management of our area field programs by: preparing equipment, vehicles and tools for field season; scheduling field work for multiple individuals; ensuring safety protocols are adhered to; and ensuring administrative reporting associated with field tasks are completed.
  • Conduct inspections, operations, and maintenance of dams and water control structures.
  • Labour intensive activities may include: wading in chest-deep water; using hand tools, brush saws and other power tools; clearing debris from water controls, clearing trails, and brushing dams.
  • Use GPS technologies and navigate on backroads to access remote wetland projects and satellite communications devices (Garmin InReach) to ensure safety during field work.
  • Responsible for assessment of site hazards, making hazard mitigation decisions, adhering to safety protocols, and making judgement calls as conditions change.
  • Record field inspections and maintenance activities through inspection entries, digital databases, and photographs.
  • Assist with the delivery of wetland infrastructure construction projects.
  • Assist with biological assessments on DUC wetland projects.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a career in environmental science, biology, earth science, agriculture, forestry, or resource management. Minimum 2-years of post-secondary education or industry work experience equivalent.
  • Experience leading a team at work (in the field an asset) with ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Familiarity with GPS-based technologies and navigation apps; Microsoft suite programs.
  • Experience operating field equipment (provided by DUC) including: 4WD pickup trucks, towing and backing a trailer, ATVs/UTVs, power tool operation and maintenance (brush cutters, chainsaws etc.), chest waders, optics, and cameras as required.
  • A valid current class 5 driver’s license and able to provide a current driver’s abstract.
  • A valid current first aid certificate or willing to take a course.
  • Ability to be based in Williams Lake, BC and work away for days at a time in company provided accommodation. Working longer days and weekends will be periodically required.
  • This position involves intense physical work, heavy lifting, and remote outdoor work in adverse weather conditions.

Assets

  • Experience working in wetlands and/or aquatic environments, particularly in remote areas.
  • Relevant certifications including ATV/UTV operation safety, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS or other.
  • Experience conducting surveys or inspections, wading in mud and water, removing vegetation debris, backroads navigation, and working in construction or around heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of wetland plants, local species, ecosystems, and their ID in the field.
