Salary: Starting salary at $21/hr, based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will be commensurate with each individual’s education and/or experience as it relates to the position.

What You Will Do
DUC in Williams Lake is seeking a Conservation & Restoration Technician to assist with managing and maintaining wetland habitats throughout the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions of BC. The successful candidates will conduct fieldwork at DUC Wetland Conservation Projects and be based in Williams Lake, BC. You will work as part of our dynamic team of biologists, engineers, and GIS specialists. All equipment required for the position will be provided by DUC, as well as the necessary training. This position will provide an opportunity to gain experience and skills in conservation/resource management.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct inspections, operations, and maintenance of dams and water control structures.
- Labour intensive activities include wading in chest-deep water; using hand tools, brush saws and chainsaws; clearing debris from water controls, clearing trails, and brushing dams.
- Assist with other maintenance activities at DUC projects which include sign installations and repairing fences, gates, catwalks, etc.
- Use GPS technologies and navigate on backroads to access remote wetland projects and satellite communications devices (Garmin InReach) to ensure safety during field work.
- Record field inspections and maintenance activities through inspection entries, digital databases, and photographs.
- Assist with the delivery of wetland infrastructure construction projects.
- Assist with biological habitat surveys, including waterfowl surveys on DUC wetland projects, wetland file management, photographic databases, and cataloging images.
- Coordinate with BC conservation staff to complete field activities.
This field-based position involves heavy lifting, physical work, and outdoor work in all weather conditions. Our ideal candidate will be able to take direction and execute tasks in a safe and efficient manner without direct supervision.
Requirements
- Pursuing a career in agriculture, engineering technology, biology, plant ecology, environmental science, or resource management.
- Valid class 5 BC driver’s license (in good standing) and able to provide a current driver’s abstract.
- Experience working outdoors in remote areas.
- Comfortable with the safe operation (or learning to operate) of field equipment including: 4WD pickup trucks, ATV/UTV’s, chest waders, and various power tools.
- Comfortable working as part of a team or independently.
- Experience being outdoors for extended periods of time, in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed, including longer days, evenings, and weekends at times.
- Ability to live in Williams Lake, BC, and work away for days at a time in company provided accommodation.
Assets
- Relevant certifications including ATV/UTV operation safety, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS or other.
- Experience with power tool operation and maintenance (brush saws, chainsaws etc.)
- Experience conducting biological surveys, wading in mud and water, removing vegetation debris, backroad navigation, working at remote field sites, and working in construction.
- Knowledge of the use of digital tools for data collection and management such as Microsoft Access, ArcGIS online, and data collection apps: Survey123, FieldMaps (Collector).
- Knowledge of basic biology, local species, ecosystems, and survey techniques.
