About Humber Arboretum
The Humber Arboretum is a thriving natural ecosystem and outdoor learning space that advances the highest potential and well-being of the community through strengthening our relationships with nature and with each other. Encompassing 100 hectares at the back of Humber College North Campus, the Humber Arboretum is free to visit and offers a variety of programming to both Humber College students and the general public. It exists as a unique tri-partnership between Humber College, City of Toronto, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. The Centre for Urban Ecology (CUE) is home to the Humber Arboretum’s educational programs and special events. Position Details
Title: Nature Interpreter
Status: Part-Time
Hours: April to October 35 hours per week; November to March 24 hours per week

Salary (per hour): (Min) $20.29 (Max) $31.22
What you will do:
Reporting to the Humber Arboretum Director, the incumbent is responsible for supporting all facets of environmental education in the Humber Arboretum. The incumbent will work independently as well as in close collaboration with the Coordinator of Education, Camps, and Outreach and other Arboretum environmental education staff to help realize the Humber Arboretums mission aligned with our three strategic pillars of World Ready Citizens, Healthy Communities and Thriving Nature.
Responsibilities will include:
- Delivering nature-focused, curriculum-connected workshops to students ranging in age from JK/SK to Grade 12.
- Facilitating virtual and in-person programming aligned with Humber and Guelph-Humber student placements, including the Early Childhood Education program, as well as facilitating weekly workshops aligned with the Arboretum’s Learning by Leading ™ volunteer program
- Assist with the facilitation of the Humber Arboretum’s Leading Youth in Nature Experiences (LYNX) program, for both youth (aged 14 to 17) and adult audiences.
- Facilitating our Junior Naturalist Camp for youth aged 12 to 13 , including assisting in the planning, development, scheduling, and facilitation of educational programming connected to weekly nature camp themes.
- Assist with program and workshop set-up, development, delivery, and clean-up.
Other duties will include assisting (when needed) with the implementation of the Humber Arboretum’s biodiversity enhancement plan through participation in and facilitation of various stewardship/restoration project taking place in the Humber Arboretum.
What you bring to the role:
Education
Post-secondary education in Outdoor Education, Ecology, or Environmental Education. Equivalent experience will be considered in the absence of post-secondary education.
Experience and Skills
- Experience in the planning and implementation of inclusive curriculum-connected ecologically focused outdoor education workshops both in-person and virtually.
- Ability to identify common flora and fauna of Southern Ontario (identification will be a part of the interview process)
- Ability to effectively explain subject matter related to Southern Ontario ecosystems, flora, and fauna, especially to children and youth
- Understanding of the inner connectedness of ecosystems and the ability to present these relationships to students ranging from kindergarten to university using age-appropriate terminology.
- Fun loving personality with a strong commitment to professionalism and providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little or no direct supervision.
- Hold a current certificate in First Aid, and CPR Level C
- Have a Clear vulnerable sectors Police check
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Bilingual in French and English is an asset
- Mental Health First Aid certificate is an asset
- High Five certification in the Principles of Healthy Child Development is considered an asset
- ProjectWILD and BelowZero training through the Canadian Wildlife Federation is considered an asset
