ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Superintendent, Conservation Parks, this position is responsible for providing excellent customer service and occasionally overseeing administration of conservation area programs, services, and operations at one of CVC’s fees for service Conservation Area. This includes buildings, facilities, trails, and public open spaces for liability, maintenance, customer experience, equipment operation and compliance messaging.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2 years post-secondary training in Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Leisure, Natural Resources or equivalent work experience directly related to major tasks.
- Valid Ontario Class “G2 or G” driver’s license in good standing.
- 1 year experience directly related to park operations, land care, facility maintenance, and/or special events.
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and be available to work weekends and holidays; ability to work shifts between 5am-10pm.
- Supervisory and conflict resolution experience.
- Strong communication and customer service experience; experience working with the public and customers.
- General knowledge of construction, machinery and equipment use, maintenance, and repairs.
- Experience operating various vehicles/equipment such as trucks, utility vehicles, tractors, ice augers, generators, water transfer pumps, gas and electric boat motors is an asset; -experience driving all-terrain vehicles.
- Landscaping and trail maintenance experience.
- Experience operating/using various hand and power tools such as, circular saws, table saws, drills, loppers, pole saws, battery chargers and air compressors.
- Cash handling experience.
- Standard first aid and CPR level C and AED certification.
- Pleasure Craft Operators Card.
- Knowledge of fishing techniques and species.
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
Conservation Area Operations and Maintenance
- In collaboration with the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Lead Hand, provide input in developing monthly and seasonal work plans.
- Create and complete weekly work plans while ensuring materials are available for daily operations and maintenance projects.
- Provide training for hourly staff on any equipment that may be required for daily operation, in accordance with CVC Health and Safety policies.
- Identify and communicate any safety concerns or time restraints due to processes, materials, equipment, or unforeseen circumstances.
- Responsible for meeting routine and project deadlines and supporting hourly staff when challenges or deficiencies arise.
- Responsible for Conservation Area visitor experience and health and safety inspections in accordance with CVC policies and guidelines.
- In collaboration with the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Lead Hand implement safe work procedures, policies, and practices to ensure both staff and visitor safety.
- Address, document, and report any liability concerns in a timely manner, ensuring all park facilities, buildings, trails, and waterways are in good standard of care.
- In the absence of the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or Lead Hand supervise hourly staff and volunteers during Conservation Areas programs and special events.
- Carry out safe operation and maintenance of various vehicles/equipment such as trucks, utility vehicles, tractors, ice augers, generators, water transfer pumps, gas and electric boat motors.
- Operate a point-of-sale system and multiple forms of payment.
- Responsible for accurate end of day reports and settlement.
- Support the set-up of picnics, events, and weddings.
- Carry out park maintenance which includes, but not limited to heavy lifting, carpentry, plumbing, grounds, and trail maintenance.
- Carry out daily routine tasks such as garbage’s, washroom cleaning, trail checks and ensure all informational/regulation signage is in place.
- Inform visitors about all CVC Conservation Areas and events and activities.
- Maintain a good working relationship with staff, Conservation Area members and visitors, community groups and on-site operators.
- Work effectively alone and during non-daylight hours.
- Identify hazards or potential hazards and document in available forms. Rectify issues within the set timelines, according to policies.
Enforcement
- Provide compliance messaging pursuant to Conservation Authorities Act/Regulations and trespass to Property Act.
- Respond to and de-escalate visitors engaging in aggressive or abusive behavior.
- Document occurrence and infractions and report to Provincial Offences Officers.
- Participate in emergency response and park closures as directed by the Superintendent.
- Execute and respond to extreme weather events in accordance with operational policies.
Administration
- Support and participate in the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of hourly staff.
- Review and/or provide input on the development and implementation of Safe Work Procedures (SWP), and policies, as required.
- Respond to and document visitor concerns that are raised while at Conservation Areas and report them to a supervisor.
