Ecological Restoration Field Assistant
Position Summary:
The Alderville Black Oak Savanna (BOS) is an ecological grassland research, restoration, and outreach centre within the Rice Lake Plains. The Ecological Restoration Field Assistant(s) supports Alderville BOS and Mitigomin Native Plant Nursery (MNPN) initiatives.
KEY JOB FUNCTIONS
• Invasive plant control (identification, mechanical & chemical control and collecting data).
• Habitat monitoring, grassland species identification and compilation of field data/reports.
• Assists with the implementation of restorative planning & planting initiatives.
• Identification and monitoring of plants, birds, insects, small mammals, and herptiles.
• Supports nursery operations (germination, watering, transplants, etc.) and seed collection.
• Trail and burn break building/maintenance.
• Assists with outreach events.
• Works cooperatively in a team environment; follows instructions from colleagues, and supervisors and takes a leadership role when required.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Post-secondary education in ecology, botany, biology, or environmental studies/science
• Minimum of 1-year experience working within the environmental field (Ecology, Natural Resource Sciences, Natural Areas Management, Landscaping or Horticulture) and/or outdoor physical fieldwork.
• Valid driver’s license and $1M liability insurance.
• CPIC check applicable to position upon conditional offer.
• Ability to utilize everyday software (MS Office Suite, G Suite).
Specialization required:
• Ability to repeatedly lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds and work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.
• Tallgrass species identification skills.
Considered an asset:
• Knowledge of Alderville First Nation history.
• Experience using ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, chainsaws, trimmers, mowers etc. and associated certifications.
• Show initiative and take on leadership roles when necessary.
Preferred Experience:
• Experience planting, trees, shrubs, native plants and/or gardening/landscaping.
• Ability to work independently, self-motivated, responsible, mature, trustworthy, and energetic; can adapt to a changing work environment.
• Relevant certifications (pesticide applicators, RX100, chainsaw safety, wilderness first aid) and/or ability to obtain relevant certifications.
• Familiarity with restoration maintenance equipment: power trimmer, ATV, bush hog mower, saws, pruning equipment, backpack sprayers, etc.
• Experience with prescription burns.
