POSITION OVERVIEW
The Accounting Associate plays a vital role on the Finance Team, working with the Finance Manager to accomplish a variety of accounting tasks including processing, compliance, communicating, analysis and reporting with a heavy focus on accounts payables. The incumbent in this role must understand the need to provide excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
This full-time role reports to the Finance Manager and is ideally physically based at Birds Canada’s Headquarters at the Long Point Centre for Conservation in Port Rowan, Ontario. Alternate arrangements (hybrid, fully remote) can be discussed with the successful candidate, though preference will be given to those who are within at least commuting distance Port Rowan. The ideal start date for this role is early to mid-July, and applications will be assessed as they are submitted.
TOTAL COMPENSATION
Birds Canada is proud to offer an exceptional Total Compensation Package, including a competitive starting salary and 5% RRSP matching after 12 months of service. In addition, staff enjoy a primarily employer-paid extended benefits package including health and dental coverage, Basic Group Life Insurance, Group out-of-province travel insurance, Vision, ADD&D and short- and long-term disability coverage. We offer all staff 20 days (4 weeks’) vacation per year to start along with 12 personal health days and additional paid vacation days between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
STARTING SALARY: Compensation for this role starts at $49,231 annually, commensurate with your previous experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Accounting Associate’s primary role is to support general accounting and accounts payable functions, including:
- Providing excellent customer service and support to internal and external stakeholders with respect to expenditure processes and policies, expense reporting, vendor accounts, contracts, and general accounting inquiries.
- Managing the day-to-day accounts payable operations, following established processes including timely and accurate processing of vendor invoices, credit notes, staff expense claims and payment documents.
- Supporting the month end closing procedures.
- Preparing Journal entries as required for review and posting by Finance Manager.
- Maintaining tracking of vendor contracts and recurring expenditures, ensuring accurate and timely payments are made.
- Periodically reconciling the control accounts such as accounts payable, HST/GST, accruals, prepaids, deposit and payroll accounts.
- Ensuring appropriate calculation and recording of HST/GST and the corresponding Charities Rebate.
- Investigating, identifying,, and resolving challenges associated with accounts payable and control account matters.
- Maintaining complete and accurate electronic records of all invoices, expense claims, credit notes and supporting documentation.
- Assisting and participating in the year-end T3010, external audit, and financial report preparation.
- Providing general administrative support to the Finance Manager and Senior Director Finance.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and EXPERIENCE
- At least 2 years’ experience in a finance department in a not-for-profit environment
- Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Excel, Word and accounting software.
- Experience with Blackbaud applications such as Financial Edge and Raisers Edge is an asset
- A keen understanding of, and commitment to, customer service.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
EDUCATION
- Post secondary accounting education such as CPA or accounting diploma
