Salary: Starting salary at $21/hr, based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will commensurate with each individual’s education and/or experience as it relates to the position.

What You Will Do 

DUC is seeking one Conservation Technician to assist with the management of wetland habitats in Northern BC. This position will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about and work in the field of Conservation & Resource Management while developing useful skills applicable to this and other field jobs. The successful candidate will conduct field work at DUC Wetland Conservation Projects and be based in Fort St. John, BC. There will be occasional weeklong trips to the Omineca and Skeena regions of BC. All field equipment will be provided by DUC and the candidate will be trained to use all necessary equipment, as well as appropriate safety procedures for the field work. The candidate will be trained in inspection and maintenance techniques and be supervised locally.

You will work with other staff to perform activities related to the establishment, management, and maintenance of habitat programs. Day-to-day operation and maintenance of DUC’s projects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspection, operation & maintenance of water control infrastructure at DUC wetland projects, including removing beaver dams & other control obstructions, and adjusting control settings.
  • Perform other maintenance activities at DUC wetland projects such as installing signs, repairing fences, gates, boardwalks and catwalks, etc.
  • Vegetation and invasive plant management via manual removal and application of herbicide(s).
  • Document results of inspections and maintenance activities via reports, photographs and inspection entries in digital database.
  • Assist with biological inspections of DUC wetland projects including waterfowl surveys.
  • Prepare for and assist with environmental monitoring and amphibian salvages for wetland construction activities.
  • Assist with ongoing habitat restoration projects.
  • Use GPS technologies and navigate on backroads to access remote wetland projects and satellite communications devices (Garmin InReach) to ensure safety during field work.
  • Work with community groups on wetland conservation and stewardship initiatives.

This field-based position will involve heavy lifting, physical work, and outdoor work in all weather conditions. Our ideal candidate will be able to take direction and execute tasks in a safe and efficient manner without direct supervision.

Requirements 

  • Pursuing a career in biology, ecology, environmental science, resource management, sustainability, engineering technology, agriculture, plant biology, or a similar field.
  • Valid class 5 BC driver’s license (in good standing) and provide a current driver’s abstract.
  • Comfortable working in remote areas.
  • Comfortable safely operating (or learning to operate) and troubleshooting field equipment (provided by DUC) including: 4WD pickup trucks, ATVs/UTVs, pulling and backing a trailer, chest waders, and brush saws and other hand tools.
  • Comfortable learning to treat vegetation via herbicide application.
  • Comfortable working as part of a team or independently.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed, which may include longer days, evenings, and weekends at times.
  • Ability to live in Fort St. John, BC and work away for days at a time in company provided accommodation.

Assets

  • Relevant certifications including: ATV/UTV operation safety, pesticide applicator license, First Aid/CPR, WHMIS.
  • Experience driving 4WD pick up trucks, truck and trailer, and ATVs/UTVs.
  • Experience using field equipment such as brush saws, chainsaws, binoculars, chest waders, and GPS/GIS based technologies such as ArcGIS.
  • Knowledge of basic biology, local species, and ecosystems, survey techniques, Microsoft suite programs.
  • Experience working outdoors, in remote areas conducting biological surveys, removing wooded vegetation, working on a construction site and in carpentry.
