There is one (1) temporary opportunity until April 30, 2025. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment. Remote work is allowed; this position can work up to full time from their home in British Columbia subject to an approved telework agreement.
Species and Ecosystems at Risk Information Specialist
$73,855.42 – $84,134.34 annually, plus $53.13 bi-weekly Isolation allowance for Fort Nelson; $36.53 bi-weekly isolation allowance for Smithers
The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management, including objective setting for land and marine environments, effectively managing cumulative effects and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environmental sustainability and economic resiliency.
The Species and Ecosystems at Risk Information Specialist is the lead provincial technical authority for corporate spatial species and ecosystems at risk information and manages custodial activities. The position provides specialist advice to senior ministry decision-makers, program areas and technical and professional staff in the natural resource sector on developing, using and interpreting the BC Conservation Data Centre corporate spatial data set(s). The position maximizes the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies to support the program and its clients.

Qualifications for this role include:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of related experience or post-graduate degree in a related field and one year of related experience.
- Related education fields may include Geography, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, GIS, Geomatics. Other related fields may be considered.
Related experience must include:
- Experience in a professional setting using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to perform geospatial analyses related to biological or ecological data. Specific examples should include working with various projections, data conversion, joining/relating tables, digitizing, working with different data types and managing data.
- Experience delivering data products and guidance to support clients and/or professionals in the natural resource sector.
- Experience communicating technical advice and information to a non-technical audience.
