Who we are?
North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) is a community-based unionized environmental organization. We are dedicated to conservation, restoration and sustainable development on a watershed basis, considering human, economic and natural environment needs together in an integrated watershed management approach. NBMCA’s area of jurisdiction equals over 2,900 square kilometres and is based on identified watersheds within the Lake Nipissing and the Ottawa River Basins.
Your Opportunity
This role reports to the Water Resources Specialist and the Communications and Outreach Program Specialist. This joint program role offers a balance of field-based environmental work and creative science communication. The successful candidate will contribute to the water resources program through activities such as water quality and groundwater sampling, aquatic habitat assessments, and other fieldwork as required.
In addition, the role involves translating technical information into clear, engaging content for a variety of audiences. This includes supporting the development of social media content, short videos/reels, website updates, and visual materials such as infographics.
This position is well-suited to an individual who enjoys working outdoors, has a strong foundation in environmental science, and is equally motivated to communicate scientific information in a clear, accessible, and engaging way.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Water Resources
Assist with the collection of water samples from lakes, streams, and groundwater following established protocols and safety guidelines.
Participate in fieldwork alongside the Water Resources Specialist during field days.
Help organize, document, and interpret environmental data collected from field activities.
Gain hands-on experience with water monitoring equipment and sampling techniques.
Communications
Create and schedule engaging content for social media platforms that interprets and presents scientific and water-related topics appropriate to various target audiences.
Design infographics and other visual materials to communicate who we are at NBMCA, what we do and the purpose of our programs.
Take photos and videos during fieldwork, events, and daily operations.
Assist with video creation, editing, and storytelling to support outreach.
Update website.
Assist with general outreach, attend and help organise events and provide program support as needed.
Occasional evening and weekend work.
Integration
Collaborate with all departments to ensure scientific and legislative accuracy in public-facing content.
Help develop educational materials that explain water quality, watershed health, environmental monitoring, planning and regulations, drinking water source protection and on-site sewage systems to diverse audiences.
Provide input on effective ways to communicate scientific findings visually and through storytelling.
Other duties as assigned.
Your Qualifications
Minimum college diploma or bachelor’s degree in resource/environmental studies, science communications or related field.
Familiarity with basic aquatic science field sampling techniques and equipment is considered an asset.
Boating, canoeing, and boat-trailering experience is considered an asset.
Ability and aptitude for field work, occasionally under physically demanding conditions or inclement weather.
Strong graphic design skills, social media and website management skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with a range of stakeholders including volunteers, municipalities, sponsors, and the public.
Good oral and written communication skills, technical report writing skills, and attention to detail.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
Valid Ontario driver’s license is considered an asset.
Pleasure craft operator’s card is considered an asset.
First Aid & CPR certification is considered an asset.
Candidates must meet NOHFC’s Internship requirements and be approved by NOHFC’s Workforce Development Program.
Compensation
Salary Range – $22.00 to $24.00 per hour, based on a 35-hour work week
Full-time one-year internship position.
