Program Coordinator, Aerial Insectivore Conservation – Ontario Region (parental leave cover)
Birds Canada – Ontario Region is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Program Coordinator to develop and deliver the Ontario Aerial Insectivore Conservation Program. The Coordinator reports to the Ontario Director and will be responsible for working with Birds Canada staff, supporters, and partners to coordinate monitoring, research, stewardship, and outreach for aerial insectivores in Ontario, including coordinating Birds Canada’s citizen science program, Ontario SwiftWatch. The Coordinator may also be asked to take on additional projects, depending on Ontario Program needs. The position is initially being offered as a 6-month contract, with possibility of extension.
Duties and responsibilities
- Deliver the program’s field activities, including: population survey and post-breeding movement and survival study for Bank Swallow; spring and fall roost monitoring, presence/absence surveys, and chimney inventories for Chimney Swift.
- Coordinate data entry, analyze and summarize data for reports, and communicate results to partners, supporters, and the public.
- Coordinate and support the Ontario SwiftWatch volunteer network to deliver on the program’s research and monitoring objectives.
- Coordinate the program’s stewardship activities including developing and distributing resources to landowners and other stakeholders, and working one-on-one with landowners to encourage stewardship activities on properties.
- Develop and deliver the School SwiftWatch program.
- Coordinate and run public outreach and education events.
- Regular communications via phone, email, yearly newsletter, social media, and other media with program volunteers, partners, and the public.
- Closely collaborate with the Maritimes, Quebec, and Manitoba SwiftWatch Coordinators to ensure a coherent national approach to swift monitoring and conservation.
- Help prepare technical, summary, and financial reports for funders, participants, and project partners.
- Assist Ontario Director in developing and securing funding sources for program, including writing funding applications.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education
M.Sc. or B.Sc. in biology, ecology, or an equivalent wildlife-related program.
Skills and experience
Experience in:
- Field work and bird banding
- Coordinating research and monitoring projects
- Writing scientific reports
- Coordinating volunteer programs and/or programs for migratory bird conservation
- Delivering outreach and/or stewardship projects, especially for species at risk
- Working with private landowners, the public, municipalities, and/or other stakeholders to promote stewardship activities
Knowledge and skills:
- High level of organization and record keeping skills
- Strong leadership and ability to problem solve
- Strong interpersonal and partnership building skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Data management skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including in field settings
- Good knowledge of aerial insectivores (e.g., able to identify by sight and sound, familiar with ecology, knowledgeable about conservation issues)
- Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
Strong assets:
- Experience delivering education programs with a conservation focus
- Previous fundraising experience
- Competent with statistical analyses and data manipulation (e.g., R, ArcGIS)
- Knowledge and/or experience with population sampling techniques
Location
The position is based in Port Rowan, Ontario. Accommodation may be available if needed. The position requires travel throughout southern Ontario to meet with project partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders. Evening and weekend work may be required, especially during migration and breeding periods. On some occasions, travel may require an overnight stay. Accommodation will be provided during travel.

Salary
$3,500 – $4,000 per month, plus legal benefits
