Wildlife Animal Care Internship
A Procyon internship is an ideal opportunity for people who are interested in pursuing a career with animals, whether you need the experience in order to get into an animal care program or the wildlife knowledge and training to get a job in the field.
Voluntary (unpaid) internships are available at Procyon Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre, a non-profit agency with a mandate to rehabilitate and release. Interns work on a team with experienced volunteers, our Animal Care Coordinator, and our Animal Care Technician.
Procyon interns care for animals such as deer, raccoons, opossums, fox, coyotes, porcupines, rabbits, squirrels, bats, and skunks that are either brought to us as newborn orphans or that need medical care due to sickness or injury. Through both seminars and day-to-day work, you will learn how to do physical assessments on newly admitted wildlife, identify illness and injuries, provide fluid therapy, prepare and administer medications, tube and syringe feed infants, provide wound treatment, safely handle all species, release animals back to the wild, and keep thorough records on each animal.
We are a rehabilitation centre, so cleanliness is a high priority. Besides preparing food and feeding the wildlife, volunteers are also responsible for cleaning enclosures, doing laundry and dishes, mopping floors, and sanitizing all areas.
Internships are from 2-6 months long, beginning in April. The work week is 40 hours, with the option of spreading that time over 4 or 5 days. Most shifts are in the evening and can be any day of the week, often on the weekends. The earliest shifts start at 6am.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A Tetanus vaccine is required and a Rabies vaccine is recommended, though optional. Procyon does provide basic on-site accommodation if needed, with laundry facilities and internet connection.
In order that all volunteers work in a safe environment, we have protocols in place such as providing staff with protective equipment, limiting the number of people in specific areas, and restricting the rehab to staff only.
