Wetlands Workforce Field Crew Supervisor – Yaqan Nukiy Wetlands Project

The Wetlands Workforce (WW) project is a collaborative initiative with multiple conservation organizations and First Nations communities to support the maintenance, monitoring and inventory of wetland sites across B.C. We are seeking a Field Crew Supervisor to support the Lower Kootenay Band and lead a team to work towards restoring, maintaining and monitoring the 517-hectare Yaqan Nukiy Wetlands Project. The WW Project is supported through the Province of BC’s economic stimulus fund and will provide temporary employment for a minimum of 100 people. The applicant must be a B.C. resident. In response to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on employment for women, Indigenous Peoples and youth, hiring preference will be given to women, Indigenous Peoples, and youth (30 and under) for these positions. Role Details:
This is a full-time, contracted position ending on December 15, 2021. Evenings, weekends and/or extended hours may be required to accommodate project schedules, field placements, training and other events.
This position is supported by BCWF while directly supervised by the Community Planner of the Lower Kootenay Band. The Field Crew Supervisor will coordinate the day-to-day planning and operations for the Yaqan Nukiy Wetlands Project, lead and support a crew of technicians in planting native species, removing invasive vegetation, maintaining physical structures and monitoring stations in a safe manner. Other duties and responsibilities may be added throughout the work term, based on project needs.
Work conditions will primarily be outdoors, in various weather conditions throughout the season, with wildlife encounters and insect activity likely. Work can be physically demanding and applicants should be capable of and prepared to work on their feet for extended periods, in adverse conditions, to regularly carry loads up to ~22 kg (50lb), and to work with power tools and machinery on a regular basis.
Wage: $25-30/hour, to be reviewed based on experience
Core Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with Lower Kootenay Band Community Planner and restoration specialists with planning and logistics of field operations.
- Ensure safety requirements and protocols are implemented and adhered to in the field.
- Respond to any first-aid emergency or incident that may occur at work sites.
- Oversee and support effective completion of field tasks, including but not limited to removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, maintaining physical structures and wildlife monitoring stations, and data collection.
- Provide guidance, leadership and mentorship to Field Crew and facilitate a positive work culture.
- Ensure standardized data collection procedures are followed by Field Crew and other participants.
- Prepare and submit field activity records and reports to Lower Kootenay Band and WW Headquarters team.
- Interact respectfully with contractors, Band members, public, representatives of partnering organizations.
- Other duties as directed by the Community Planner and Wetlands Workforce Project Manager.
Competencies & Skills:
The WW aims to primarily hire those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting economic downturn. Training will be provided to ensure that those unfamiliar with wetlands maintenance and restoration work are comfortable and safe in their duties. Applicant must be a B.C. resident and able to travel to Yaqan Nukiy Wetlands Project sites, near Creston, B.C.
Work Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years of experience developing and/or supervising ecological restoration activities, preferably within wetlands and riparian areas.
- Experience managing and maintaining a safe workplace in a wilderness/backcountry environment.
- Experience supervising a team of 3-6 people.
- Proven experience building a positive and engaging work culture.
- Experience with safe operation of ATV’s, power tools and other equipment is an asset.
- Experience working with First Nation and indigenous communities an asset.
- Experience with physical labour, such as landscaping or tree-planting is an asset.
- Experience with surveying, wildlife monitoring, or data collection is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to be flexible in assigned duties as needed by the Project.
- Ability to schedule and delegate tasks on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
- Openness to learn new skills and tasks.
- Ability to meet physical demands of the job and adverse outdoors conditions.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully in a small team.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication.
- Knowledge of wildlife and wetland vegetation identification is an asset.
- Knowledge of drone operation and GIS mapping is an asset.
Education:
- A diploma or degree in a relevant program (e.g., Ecological Restoration; Environmental Science) is an asset
Other:
- Class 4 or 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent with a clean driving record.
- Ability to travel to Yaqan Nukiy Wetlands Project sites, near Creston, B.C.
