Eastern Ontario Conservation Technician 2022

Purpose and General Description:

NCC is looking for a passionate person to join the Eastern Ontario stewardship team as a Conservation Technician. Working closely with NCC’s Coordinator of Conservation Biology, this internship position will help the stewardship team prepare for the 2022 field season, conduct fieldwork across Eastern Ontario (with a focus on the Frontenac Arch and Ottawa Valley), and process field data. There are also opportunities to work closely with partner organizations, local stewards and volunteers. This position is intended to support a junior professional by providing an inspired, learning-focused environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist with planning fieldwork for the 2022 field season;
• Data entry, analysis, research and reporting using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and an internal database system;
• Participate in a variety of fieldwork on NCC properties across eastern Ontario including:
• Classifying ecosystems by identifying vegetation communities;
• Conducting property inspections to check for natural disturbances, vandalism, trespassing, emerging threats, and risks and liabilities;
• Removing invasive plant species using manual and chemical control methods;
• Monitor biodiversity targets (e.g. species at risk, vegetation communities) and threats (e.g. invasive species);
• General property maintenance including trail monitoring and sign installation;
• Assist with volunteer and property steward management;
• Assist with compliance monitoring of conservation easements.
Required Skills and Attributes:
This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
• Passionate about conserving nature;
• Love for being outdoors and the ability to work for extended periods in various weather conditions and over rough terrain;
• Willingness to learn and follow protocols;
• Comfort working remotely and self-motivated to work independently;
• Excellent organizational skills;
• Proficient with data management and spreadsheet software;
• Physical work will be required (e.g., strenuous hiking, carrying backpack sprayer, etc.);
• Valid class “G” driver’s license, ability to rent a vehicle and comfort driving on highways and rough roads.
The following additional skills and abilities would be assets in this position but are not required to apply. Training will be provided by NCC to further develop these skills:
• Basic knowledge of plants, wildlife and vegetation communities as well as experience using identification keys;
• Navigational skills including understanding of GPS devices or applications, compass, and air photo interpretation;
• Experience engaging with members of the public or volunteers;
• Standard First Aid – Level C CPR certification.
Terms of Employment:
• Full-time position must start on January 10, 2022 until September 30, 2022;
• Compensation: $17.50/hour;
• Position is based out of the Elgin (Frontenac Arch) office at the Queens University Biological Station (QUBS). There is flexibility for the candidate to work remotely during the winter and early spring. They will be required to complete fieldwork in Eastern Ontario 4-5 days/week from May – September;
• Accommodation (cost not covered by NCC) at QUBS during the field season may be available for the selected candidate;
• The position may require occasional weekend and evening work;
• Positions will include “office work” that will be completed in a work from home setting;
• These positions will be partially funded by the Clean Foundation’s Science Horizon’s program. Applicants are required to meet the following criteria:
o Must be no more than 30 years of age at the start of employment;
o Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or a person who has been granted Refugee status in Canada;
o Must have graduated from a post-secondary program;
o Must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance during the internship; and
o Must not currently be working for the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
• It is preferred but not required that the successful candidate belong to an employment equity deserving group, defined by the Clean Foundation as:
o Women;
o Visible minority youth;
o Indigenous youth;
o Youth living with disabilities;
o Youth from Official Language Minority Communities (OLMC);
o Youth residing in a rural or remote location. Rural refers to communities with a population of less than 5,000 people and a population density of less than 400 people / km². Remote refers to a permanent or long-term settlement with at least 10 dwellings that does not have year-round road access.
