Junior Aquatic Ecologist & Field Technician
Aquafor Beech Limited is looking for a Full-time Junior Aquatic Ecologist and Field Technician to join the firm’s Ecology and Field Support Team. The primary focus of this role will be to support the firm’s Senior Aquatic Ecologist in aquatic habitat assessments, fish community assessments, and benthic community assessments. The successful applicant will also provide assistance to the field team, whose primary responsibility includes conducting a variety of field activities relating to surface water and stormwater management monitoring. The successful applicant will be providing technical assistance to the Senior Aquatic Ecologist and Technical Field Support Lead with daily tasks that include the following:
- Aquatic Habitat Assessments following Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP); Fish Community Assessments using backpack electrofishing, seine net, hoop net and other industry standard techniques; Headwater Drainage Feature (HDF) Assessments following OSAP and TRCA/CVC protocol; and Benthic Community Assessments using the Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) protocol.
- Conducting various monitoring activities to characterize surface water, stormwater, aquatic ecology, and sediment conditions. Monitoring activities may include: collecting water and sediment samples for laboratory analysis, field testing (pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, etc.), surface water flow measurements, installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment.
- Topographic and Bathymetric Surveying.
- Compiling and analyzing collected monitoring data.
- Assisting in reporting writing and preparation of technical memos, permitting, letters, and proposals
QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have the following qualifications:
- University Degree or Technical Diploma in Environmental/Earth Science, Science/Ecology/Biology or similar programs.
- Highly comfortable working in the outdoors in variable weather.
- Certifications, or proof of enrollment in one or more of: Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP); Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN); MNRF Class 2 Electrofishing; OSAP Headwater Drainage Feature Assessment.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, discretion, autonomy, and flexibility.
- Experience working with Google Suite, MS Office, and ability to quickly learn new platforms.
- Experience working with ArcGIS and AutoCAD, as well as surveying equipment, considered an asset.
- Fluency (speaking, reading, and writing) in English.
- Track record of managing time effectively and balancing part time work with other commitments.
- Valid Class G Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.

Position Type: Full-time (6-month probation period)
Salary Range: Starting at $50,000 – $60,000/year (Commensurate on experience)
Vacation: 2 weeks
