CONSERVATION DATA ANALYST
BIRDS CANADA – ATLANTIC REGION
Birds Canada is seeking a Conservation Data Analyst to assist in the delivery of multiple conservation projects in Atlantic Canada, by providing analytical support, data, and mapping products for project planning, reporting and publications. The Candidate should possess a Master’s degree in environmental sciences (geography, natural resources, biology, ecology), and have practical project experience with ArcGIS or other GIS software, technical/analytical skills related to wildlife data analysis (statistical and data modelling) and working knowledge of R. Candidate can expect to work in a small team environment with enthusiastic colleagues who like birds.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Day-to-day activities and responsibilities are varied and will be developed in cooperation with the Atlantic Director. The Conservation Data Analyst will be involved in a variety of Atlantic projects (Nocturnal Owl Survey, Maritimes Marsh Monitoring, High Elevation Landbird Project, Piping Plover Conservation, shorebird and seabird work), tasks including:
- Data/database management
- Analyzing data and interpreting results
- Working with Director and Program Coordinators to assess geographic analysis needs and develop methods, and helping program staff visualize and query data.
- Cartography – providing maps for program publications, newsletters, and project planning.
- Landscape analyses (eg. manipulating land cover inventory, habitat associations) and habitat modelling
- Communicate results through various means, including written reports and primary literature if applicable (with other members of Atlantic team), as well as BirdsCan website, newsletters, and targeted reports to funders.
- Other analytical tasks as determined by the Atlantic Director
APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE:
- in biology, conservation, ecology, geography, or related field.
- Understanding of bird survey techniques (protocols, spatial sampling methods, assumptions, practical limitations)
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, map projections, scale and resolution, accuracy and precision, and database design
- Practical experience with statistical and GIS software packages, especially ArcGIS, and R
- Experience with data management and manipulation
- Experience sourcing and manipulating landscape data (e.g., land cover classifications, forest inventory, zoning, road layers).
- Proven familiarity statistical methods and approaches used for landscape, ecological, and biological analyses, particularly those used for large datasets resulting from point counts or Automated Recording Units collected over years in order to monitor population/species occupancy and abundance (e.g., GLM, GAMM, N-mixture models, etc.)
- Well-developed project management and documentation skills, attention to detail, and high standards of quality control.
- Familiarity with MS office suite of products (Excel, Word)
- Strong communication, organization and problem-solving skills
- Diplomacy, tact, and good interpersonal skills for working cooperatively within a team setting.
- Knowledge of, and interest in, birds and fieldwork is an asset.
This position is based in Birds Canada’s office in Sackville, New Brunswick, but consideration may be made for qualified individuals working from elsewhere. This position is being offered initially as a 6-month contract, with possibility of renewal contingent on performance, opportunity, and funding. Part-time contracts will also be considered. The position reports to the Atlantic Director. Eligibility for EcoCanada program is an asset.
