Head Indigenous Relations (full time position)
The Opportunity
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), one of the nation’s leading conservation organizations, is looking for a confident, energetic, and dedicated individual to join our Boreal Team as Head Indigenous Relations.
You will serve as DUC’s liaison and will work directly with Indigenous communities, nations and organizations in a meaningful, respectful, and supportive manner on stewardship projects that advance mutually beneficial conservation goals in a manner consistent with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
You will also be responsible in building and maintaining strong key partnerships and relationships with senior Indigenous leaders across Canada’s Boreal, including, but not limited to:
· Initiate and establish contacts and develop long-lasting connections and relationships through sustained community and nation engagement.
· Work directly with leaders, groups and organizations to support a range of Indigenous-led conservation activities.
· Advance DUC tools and mechanisms that support Indigenous-led conservation activities.
· Collaborate with other business lines including conservation programs, conservation solutions services, policy, fundraising, and communications to achieve conservation goals.
· Work with the National Manager Boreal Programs and other leaders within DUC to generate funding to build capacity to support Indigenous-led conservation.
· Work with Ottawa based DUC’s Director of Government Affairs in our outreach to the federal government and Indigenous national organizations.
Requirements
· A minimum of a post-secondary degree is required. A degree in natural resources management, biology, ecology or equivalent would be an asset. However, a combination of education, skills, and experience will be considered for this position.
· Specific experience in knowledge gathering and sharing within an ethical space to support Indigenous-led conservation.
· A deep understanding of and an established record of working with Indigenous communities across Canada.
· A proven track record of success in working with all aspects of Indigenous communities, nations and organizations, including engagement, facilitation, partnership/project coordination, and respectful and successful long-lasting and sustained relationships.
· Proficient with MS Office and related project management and tracking software.
· Strong planning, reporting, and project management skills
· Advanced certification/training on Indigenous Engagement or other related specialized study will also be considered an asset.
· Experience working within an ethical space and braiding several ways of knowing to help develop and advance decision support tools is considered an asset.
· Ability to travel to remote areas/communities.
· A valid driver’s license.
· Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
