Conservation & Restoration Technicians (2) Summer Student Positions
The Opportunity
Ducks Unlimited Canada in Williams Lake is seeking two Conservation & Restoration Technicians to assist with the development and management of wetland habitats throughout the Cariboo region of BC. This position will provide excellent opportunity to learn about and work in the field of Conservation/Resource Management.
Duties & Responsibilities
Field Operation and Management of Wetland Conservation Projects
- assisting DUC staff in the daily operation of water control structures
- documenting and inspecting dams and water controls on existing projects
- performing maintenance activities on existing projects such as:
- installing signs, vegetation control, repairing trails, walkways and gates
- removing beaver debris
- recording activities/changes on wetland conservation projects
Habitat Inventory and Waterfowl Census
- conducting field surveys on existing and/or future projects within freshwater wetlands
- recording waterfowl observations during project inspections
- assisting with ongoing habitat monitoring projects
Administration of Wetland Conservation Projects
- assisting with wetland file management, photographic databases, cataloging images, entry or retrieval of computer data (including scanning),
- preparing report materials
Additional Details
- Start date is May 4, 2020; end date is ~August 31, 2020
- Pay range: $18 per hour, based on a 35-hour work-week (plus 4% vacation pay)
Requirements
- Students pursuing a career in agriculture, engineering, biology, plant ecology, environmental science or resource management preferred
- Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Must have a valid current driver’s license (in good standing) and a current driver’s abstract
- Knowledge of basic biology, local species and ecosystems; GPS-based technologies and survey techniques; computer programs such as the Microsoft suite of programs; ArcGIS (an asset)
- Operation of various field equipment (which DUC will provide) including: 4WD pickup trucks, ATVs, tools (mowers, brush cutters, chain saws, etc.), chest waders, binoculars, and cameras as required.
- Construction experience is an asset
- These positions involves physical work, heavy lifting and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
