A conservation officer’s job is diverse and demanding. As the front-line men and women responsible for environmental enforcement in British Columbia, a tremendous amount of responsibility and trust is invested in each member of the Conservation Officer Service (COS). The Haida Gwaii Sergeant leads and manages the COS/FLNRO program at the field level day-to-day to ensure integrated service plans and work plan objectives, policies, procedures, and legal requirements are met. The Sergeant supervises an integrated staff of Conservation Officers, FLNRO Natural Resource Officers and member(s) of the Haida First Nation, some in remote locations, to address regulatory and criminal non-compliance issues and to mitigate/remediate impacts upon human health/safety and the environment on Haida Gwaii.
The Haida Gwaii Sergeant position is unique in that it is the only isolated government position at this rank in the BC COS. Additional housing and travel incentives are also available for the successful Haida Gwaii Sergeant. If you want an exciting career in a BC coastal environment and a unique island life while developing your career in a unique CO Sergeant position unlike any other in BC, consider this position.
The Village of Queen Charlotte is one of seven communities on Haida Gwaii. 90 km off the British Columbia Coast and just south of the Alaska panhandle, Haida Gwaii is home to the Haida Nation and a diverse group of rural island dwellers. A total population of approximately 5,000 is spread throughout the archipelago and provides for small community living with all the amenities you’ll ever need.
