Field Technicians – Forest Birds at Risk Program
Birds Canada (BC) is hiring experienced, highly-motivated, and personable field staff to survey for forest birds at risk beginning in April 2021. BC anticipates hiring up to two Field Technicians to conduct forest bird surveys in southwestern Ontario (Norfolk and Elgin counties) and in the Frontenac Arch (based out of Queen’s University Biological Station).
POSITION CONCEPT
The Field Technicians for the Forest Birds at Risk Program (“Technicians” hereafter) will survey for several forest birds at risk, specifically Cerulean Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Prothonotary Warbler, and Red-headed Woodpecker. Technicians will conduct point count surveys, habitat surveys and forest health risk surveys, on a daily basis. Technicians will also be required to search for and monitor nests of the above focal species. In addition, technicians will be in communication with landowners, including seeking permission to conduct surveys on their properties, and may be involved in some outreach work. Finally, the position will involve some data entry.
EDUCATION
Most candidates will be in the process of or have already completed, a B.Sc. in biology or ecology or an equivalent wildlife-related program.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Excellent knowledge of Ontario forest birds including the ability to identify birds by sight and sound (e.g., must have experience identifying birds outside of coursework)
- Experience conducting point counts and/or surveying birds using other sampling techniques
- Experience with forestry-related tools and measurements is an asset
- Experience working in the field (field work in a remote location is an asset)
- Organized with a high attention for detail
- Able to take clear and detailed notes
- Able to use GPS
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Able to work in a team environment as well as independently
- Working knowledge of Microsoft programs excel and word
- Valid driver’s license
- First Aid Certification
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Surveys for forest birds at risk, vegetation, and forest health risks
- Aid in Red-headed Woodpecker habitat study
- Coordinate with supervisor and/or field crew leader to plan day-to-day activities
- Help create and maintain good relationships with landowners and other stakeholders
- Data management and entry
SALARY: $2,800 – $3,000 (CDN) per month, plus statutory benefits and accommodation (bunkhouse or tent-camping, dependent on COVID situation).
