HMANA Seeks Executive Director
Who we are and what we do:
The Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA) was founded in 1974 and works to advance scientific knowledge and promote the conservation of raptor populations through the study, enjoyment, and appreciation of raptor migration. HMANA was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the State of New York and is currently a licensed nonprofit in Michigan.
HMANA:
● Collects hawk count data from over two hundred affiliated raptor monitoring sites throughout North, Central and South America.
● Manages HawkCount, a near-real-time international database of hawk counts across the continent.
● Promotes the scientific analysis of hawk count data and generates raptor population assessments as a key partner of the Raptor Population Index (RPI).
● Publishes the semi-annual journal Hawk Migration Studies, which includes seasonal reports on raptor migration, research and education efforts.
● Supports and promotes all member raptor monitoring sites from Canada to South America, offering research assistance, training, workshops, tours, and grants.
● Provides ongoing training and educational opportunities for young, new and experienced hawkwatchers.
HMANA seeks to hire an Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization and further its mission. The ED will report to the Board of Directors and have strategic and operational responsibility for executing our mission, as well as oversight of volunteers, staff, and programs. The ED will have the ability to work remotely and in close cooperation with the Raptor Monitoring and Programs Director.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The ED is a full time, professional position whose primary responsibility is to lead and promote growth of the organization. The ED has primary responsibility for fundraising, outreach, and financial & administrative management. The ED is accountable to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and is responsible for:
•Setting the organizational strategies in consultation with the Board of Directors;
•Implementing goals and objectives to achieve those strategies;
•Being an enthusiastic and engaging leader inspiring support and growth;
•Facilitating the work of staff, volunteers and leadership;
•Operating the organization within the board-approved annual budget.
Fundraising & Communications (60%)
● Leads fundraising activities for the organization including, setting goals and engaging the board and staff in reaching those goals.
● In collaboration with the Development Committee of the Board of Directors, researches, tracks and writes funding proposals to foundations, corporations and government agencies.
● Teams up with the Development Committee, Executive and Finance Committee and board members to create and maintain a major donor program, leading efforts in approaching, cultivating and soliciting major donors.
● Works to broaden funding for general operations.
Strengthen HMANA’s appeal and outreach (25%)
• Enthusiastically represent the full breadth of HMANA’s mission and work to the general hawkwatching public and the broader conservation community.
• Represent and enhance the value of HMANA’s data within the raptor science community.
Strengthen collaborations with partners to support the activities of RPI to produce timely and regularly updated information on the status of North America’s raptors.
• Enhance and sustain programs to serve HMANA’s constituents and independent monitoring sites by engaging the enthusiasm and talents of volunteers.
• Attend and participate in HMANA board meetings and events.
• Actively work to better integrate, coordinate and collaborate among all of HMANA’s programs, committees, board members and staff.
• Assist with planning and coordinating conferences and other activities as developed.
• Keep abreast of major conservation and environmental issues, especially those affecting raptor migration.
Administration and Financial Management (15%):
• Oversees the day-to-day operations.
• Works with the Executive and Finance Committee and Board of Directors to develop and implement a balanced annual budget.
• Develops operations planning and annual reporting instruments, including plans, budgets and annual programmatic reports to treasurer, board of directors and constituents.
• In consultation with HMANA Board of Directors and Executive and Finance Committee, hires, supports and supervises staff, including regular and systematic review of their work.
• Supports Raptor Monitoring Programs Director in program development.
Preferred Qualifications:
● A demonstrated passion for and experience with environmental conservation.
● 5+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience encompassing all aspects of management and fiscal oversight for a nonprofit organization.
● Proven fundraising and grant-writing success.
● Experience with corporate partnerships and support.
● History of networking and building cooperative relationships with organizations with shared missions.
● Experience working with a large volunteer corps.
● Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
● Background in general birding and avian conservation.
● Committed to building relationships with diverse communities, indigenous reconciliation and anti-racism.
● Familiarity with software applications commonly used in the nonprofit sector.
● Ability to travel as required.
● Excellent organizational and collaborative skills as well as proficient written and verbal communication skills.

Salary and Benefits:
Competitive total compensation and benefits package between $50-53K with the successful candidate’s experience.
