Island Nature Trust is Prince Edward Island’s oldest private charitable land trust, protecting natural lands and waters for wildlife and people in perpetuity. We are a membership-based organization directed by a volunteer board and supported by a small contingent of dedicated staff.
About the Position:
The Farmland Birds Program Coordinator works in collaboration with stakeholders including private landowners and government, to plan and implement monitoring and engagement actions while working with and reporting to the Species at Risk Manager. This is a project that aims to increase nesting success of two threatened species, the Bobolink and Barn Swallow, by reducing the impacts of key agricultural practices on the nesting success of these species. During the field season, the coordinator should anticipate spending 75% – 85% of their time in the field monitoring and performing site assessments.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Facilitate the timely and accurate collection and management of data essential to the conservation effort
- Communicate regularly with the Species at Risk Manager and external stakeholders on activities
- Coordinate with landowners to ensure crews have access to field sites and keep landowners informed of plans and activities
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to answer core questions related to the recovery of Bobolink and Barn Swallow
- Prepare communication and landowner feedback materials for landowner participants and funders
- Assist with the training and supervision of summer program staff
- Analyze field data and interpret results of reproductive effort estimates
Secondary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Assist with other Island Nature Trust programs and duties as requested by management
- Collaborate with fellow INT team members on social media posts and project information releases
Requirements:
Education:
- Required: BSc. in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Biology or a related field
- Asset: University or college specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (certificate, degree, etc.)
- Asset: MSc in a related field
Experience:
- Required: 2 years or more experience working in a related environmental field
- Required: Experience conducting fieldwork in varying and sometimes challenging terrain and conditions
- Asset: Previous experience supervising a small team
- Asset: Previous experience working for an NGO
- Asset: Demonstrated public speaking, presentation, and writing (both scientific and for public outreach) experience
Skills:
- Required: Demonstrated bird ID skills
- Required: Microsoft Office suite of products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
- Required: Ability to work independently and as a team, both in a leadership role and in a helping role
- Required: Class 5 driver’s license
- Required: Collecting, managing, and analyzing scientific data
- Required: Daily/Weekly/Seasonal time management and scheduling abilities
- Required: Ability to operate & navigate using a handheld GPS unit
- Asset: Experience using various geographic software, such as ArcPro, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, StoryMaps, Avenza Maps, and/or Google Earth Pro
- Asset: Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training
- Asset: Proficiency in French (written and oral)
- Asset: WHMIS training
- Asset: Able to perform long and sometimes tiring fieldwork days
- Asset: DSLR and digital photography skills
- Asset: Familiarity with PEI’s agricultural community and landscapes, habitats, natural communities, and species
Working Conditions:
The Farmland Birds Program Coordinator will have a balance of office work and fieldwork throughout the year. The person in this position should be prepared to perform fieldwork in a variety of terrains and weather conditions, traveling across the island, sometimes working outside regular working hours and on weekends. A reliable personal vehicle is required for work purposes (mileage is reimbursed).
Terms of Employment:
- This is a full-time position (37.5 hours/week) beginning as soon as possible
- This position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, but will require working with INT staff and liaising with stakeholders at locations across PEI
- Starting salary is $25/hour with stepped increases on an annual basis
- Health and dental benefits provided
- Three weeks’ vacation and paid statutory holidays provided
- Supervisory responsibilities of 1 seasonal staff
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must be a Canadian citizen or able to legally work in Canada
