Species-At-Risk Field Technician
Island Nature Trust is Prince Edward Island’s oldest private charitable land trust, protecting natural lands and waters for wildlife and people in perpetuity. We are a membership-based organization directed by a volunteer board and supported by a small contingent of dedicated staff. There are currently two opportunities to join our team as a species-at-risk (SAR) Conservation Technician with our Coastal Conservation program.
About the Position:
The successful candidates will assist in all aspects of the Island Nature Trust’s Coastal Conservation project for the 2023 season. This project works to conserve the Piping Plover and Bank Swallow across PEI.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Assist with all field work related to the program
- Assist with the timely and accurate collection and management of data essential to the program
- Assist with all outreach and education efforts related to the program
Secondary Responsibilities & Duties:
- Collaborate with fellow INT team members on social-media posts and project information releases
- Assist with other Island Nature Trust programs as requested by management
Requirements:
Education:
- Required: Post-secondary training in biology, conservation, or a related field
Experience:
- Required: Experience conducting field work in various weather conditions and terrains
- Required: Experience entering and organizing data
- Asset: Experience working with and managing geographic data and GPS devices
- Asset: Experience working with environmental non-government organizations
- Asset: Prior experience working with species-at-risk
Skills:
- Required: Organized and methodical approach to working – manages time effectively and is adaptable to modified work plans
- Required: Ability to work cooperatively as part of a dynamic team, and can follow direction and seek assistance and input as required
- Required: Some bird identification skills
Knowledge:
- Required: Knowledge of Species-at-Risk relevant to PEI
- Asset: Knowledge of PEI’s landscapes, habitats, natural communities, and species
Personal Attributes:
- Required: Dependable, responsible, detail-oriented
- Required: Ability to maintain a positive attitude and friendly demeanor, even during long or tiring fieldwork days
- Required: A commitment to the mission and values of INT
- Required: Must be willing to occasionally work extended hours outside in all kinds of weather
- Required: Physically fit and able to walk several kms each day on uneven terrain
Terms of Employment:
- This position is offered as a term contract (37.5 hours/week) beginning in April/May 2023 until September 1st, 2023
- The position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, but will require working in locations across PEI
- The pay rate for this position is $16.50/hour
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to be used for work (mileage to be reimbursed) are a requirement
- Must be a Canadian citizen or able to legally work in Canada
