Position Summary:
The Outdoor Educator develops and delivers high quality environmental science programs to school students. Programming will take place within the Backus Heritage Conservation Area. The Outdoor Educator is responsible for the recruitment, administration, and scheduling of volunteers for special events. This position works out of the Conservation Education Centre located in Backus Heritage Conservation Area (BHCA) and reports to the Superintendent of Conservation Areas.
Qualifications:
- University or College graduate of environmental sciences, education, recreation or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years experience in education program development and delivery to a variety of audiences
- Demonstrated experience developing curriculum-based education programming and outcome evaluations
- Thorough knowledge of the natural history of the Long Point Watershed
- Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, independent worker
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Physical requirements of the position include: the ability to lift and carry 20- 30lbs; ability to walk and navigate gravel paths, uneven surfaces, and flights of stairs; ability to work in an environment that may contain air pollutants (pollens, dust, wood smoke), ability to tolerate exposure to nuisance wildlife and pest debris, ability to work inside and outside in all weather
- Able to work in a team environment and work effectively with volunteers
- Excellent oral communication, writing and research skills
- Excellent supervisory skills
- Police criminal records check with Vulnerable Sector screening required prior to hiring of this position
- Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license required.
Responsibilities:
1. Education Program:
- Coordinate, research, develop, deliver and evaluate curriculum-based environmental science education programs
- Maintain and update education manuals for site use
- In partnership with the Heritage Programmer, book all Outdoor Education programs and maintain communications with teachers and school administrators
- Provide excellent customer and client services
- Maintain all relevant statistics and prepare reports as needed
- Maintain, organize and repair education supplies and teaching facilities and exhibits
- Perform sanitary maintenance duties including cleaning of program areas, equipment, and public washroom facilities
- Assist in the scheduling of volunteers
- Ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and volunteers and protect the site’s resources
2. Volunteer Management:
- Manage administrative systems and records for the recruitment, training, evaluation, and recognition of volunteers
- Conduct volunteer intake and evaluation process
- Schedule and organize mandatory and specialized volunteer training
- Coordinate placement of newly oriented volunteers
- Coordinate communications for volunteers
- Coordinate the scheduling of volunteers
3. Events Program (seasonally):
- Plan, organize and implement special events for Backus Heritage Conservation Area
- Develop a system of continuous improvement for events and programming
- Seek out unique programming partnerships with community groups
Location/Working Conditions:
- Backus Heritage Conservation Area, Port Rowan, ON
- Monday-Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm
- Weekends, evenings and extra hours may be required for special events
- Indoor and outdoor work environments
