Aquatic Field Biologist
Natural Resource Solutions Inc. (NRSI) is an environmental consulting firm located in Waterloo, Ontario. NRSI is a well-respected firm that focuses on technical excellence in the field of ecology for a wide range of projects across Canada, including land developments, renewable energy, natural heritage planning, ecological restoration, research and monitoring, and species assessments and recovery strategies.
NRSI is currently looking to hire two qualified individuals to support senior and mid-level staff with fisheries type tasks.
Position Type: Contract Position [approximately 40 hours per week]. One 4-month and one 8-month contract, with potential for extension based on work load.
Start Date: May 2022 (flexible start date)
Location: Waterloo, Ontario (extensive fieldwork throughout Ontario)
Key Requirements: A valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and ability to work remotely. Extensive field travel to remote sites expected.
Salary Range: $18-24/hour [commensurate on training and experience]

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a project manager or advisor, the qualified person will be responsible for:
Lead role in the completion of aquatic habitat assessments and fisheries assessments, including fish community, freshwater mussel community, benthic invertebrate and water quality sampling;
Leading or supporting crews in remote locations utilizing a variety of protocols;
Operating a variety of boats within different settings;
Collect data accurately, as well as complete data entry and analysis accurately;
Prepare components of reports or memos, including mapping and appendices, with a level of supervision; and
Ensure proper permits, equipment, safety training, etc. have been obtained for projects,
Other tasks as needed dependent on skills, interests, and project requirements.
Requirements
Pleasure Craft operators’ card and experience with boat operation/troubleshooting an asset,
· Identification of fish, mussels, and aquatic plants. Identification of other plants and wildlife is an asset;
Knowledge of field work methods and procedures;
Knowledge of field work safety procedures;
· Understanding of consulting firm protocols and business etiquette;
· Valid driver’s license and insurance eligibility;
· Due to necessary precautions associated with COVID-19, access to a personal vehicle and the ability to work remotely is also a requirement;
· Working and being outdoors for potentially long hours, in a variety of weather conditions, including camping in remote settings;
· Strong organizational and time management abilities;
· Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work;
· Clear and effective communication skills, both written and orally; and
Assets
The following skills and experience are considered an asset:
· Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification; and
· Valid backpack electrofishing certification; and
· Physical fitness is also an important component of this position, and candidates should be comfortable walking for several hours and on uneven terrain.
