THE ROLE
OBC is seeking a skilled outdoor professional who will be responsible for risk and safety oversight of our core programs and our Training Academy across Canada. Reporting to the Head of Program, and working closely with the National Program Team, the National Risk and Safety Manager will ensure that OBC’s safety and field risk management culture, practices and policies are at an industry-leading standard. Domestic travel and occasional international travel will account for up to 10% of the successful candidate’s time in this role.

OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT
· Provide risk and safety oversight and leadership to OBC Core Programs (50%) and the OBC Training Academy for Outdoor Professionals (50%)
· Use a creative combination of traditional and innovative techniques to ensure that OBC anticipates and mitigates risk effectively
· Maintain and update OBC’s Safety Policies and Procedures, and lead the dissemination and training efforts to support the implementation of those policies and procedures by ensuring that staff are kept up-to-date on a variety of relevant topics, such as Covid-19 endemic phase response, climate change, wildfires, and mental health issues.
· Working with the Head of Program and OBC program team (including management and instructors), ensure that OBC’s Safety Policies and Procedures are relevant and up-to- date
· Develop and manage programs and policies to meet occupational health and safety legislation requirements
· Manage the evolution of OBC’s response to Covid-19 as the disease moves into the endemic phase. Regularly monitor advice from health authorities and OBC medical advisors, and recommend policy changes as appropriate
· Take the lead in developing analysis, new policies and procedures and best practice documentation on emergent, novel and new operational risks including Covid-19, sexual misconduct prevention and investigation; wildfire response; and development of a head injury protocol
· Evaluate and improve the risk management elements of the OBC staff training system, to ensure that instructors are up-to-date, informed, and motivated in terms of OBC’s safety and risk management culture and priorities. Increase national alignment with OBC safety policies, desired culture, and risk tolerances
· Conduct and/or assist with Regional Safety Reviews, as defined by the OBC Risk Management Policy, and as assigned by the Head of Program
· Take the lead on incident analysis, in both an on-going manner and by authoring the Annual Field Safety and Risk Report
· Work with the Head of Program to ensure that up-to-date National Crisis Protocol and Regional Emergency Plans are in place
· Be an effective part of a team that provides On Call emergency support to field programs. Able to serve as Incident Commander when required
· Support the Head of Program and Head of Marketing in seeking out risk management outreach opportunities in order to provide leadership in the outdoor adventure education sector. Examples: risk management reviews, consulting, staff training for colleague organizations, media articles
· Each year, attend or present at the Wilderness Risk Management Conference and other relevant events
WHAT YOU BRING

REQUIREMENTS
· Clear Vulnerable Sector Check
· Wilderness First Responder (80 hours)
· 5-7 years’ experience working in the Outdoor Adventure Education sector, with a mix of field and management experience
· Highly proficient at technical writing and public speaking in English; French is an asset
· Proven record training and motivating staff
· Excellent track record of working effectively with people from diverse and equity-seeking backgrounds, especially those who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour or 2SLGBTQIA+
· Demonstrated understanding of accepted techniques for supporting mental health challenges in a backcountry context
· Proven ability to remain calm and bring focus and direction in emergency situations
· Must be able to generate results while working across teams in a highly dynamic and complex environment, with a minimum of supervision and direction
· Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends
· Domestic travel and occasional international travel will account for up to 10% of time
ASSETS
· University or college degree/diploma in a related field
· Counseling certification
· Incident Command System (ICS) training
· Previous experience with Outward Bound Canada is considered an asset
