PEI Conservation Assistant

Purpose and General Description
Seeking a flexible candidate with multiple skill sets to fill a 6-month contract position with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in Prince Edward Island (PEI). The PEI Conservation Assistant role is primarily to support the PEI Program with the organization and execution of stewardship, land management, outreach, and administrative work as it relates to the PEI Stewardship Program. Externally, they will liaise with partners and volunteers on PEI to accomplish conservation actions. Internally, they will work closely and cooperatively with the PEI Program Director and other team members within the Atlantic Region.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with partner groups to conduct community outreach to meet shared conservation objectives;
- Coordinate the planning, logistics and running of at least 2 volunteer events, and assist with the logistics of other outreach activities; interact with and recruit additional volunteers;
- Consult with partners and develop a multi-partner invasive species management plan for one conservation landscape;
- Undertake land management actions as laid out in property management plans, provide ongoing contact to volunteer land stewards and experts as it relates to data sharing; and communicate with neighbours to resolve any issues;
- Assist with fieldwork on newly acquired properties and monitoring of NCC-owned properties;
- Manage stewardship projects and enter data into NCC’s Land Information System database, making sure actions are kept up to date; prepare monitoring reports for NCC properties;
- Assist the PEI NCC office with ongoing Program activities (e.g., administrative office tasks, media events, and conservation science research).
Required Skills and Attributes
This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
- University degree (Masters preferred) with a biology, environmental studies/science, or equivalent degree;
- Exemplary and proven organization, planning, and communication (written and oral), and project management skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills including experience and proven results in working tactfully with colleagues, and ability and experience in easily communicating with a wide range of people in public and private sectors;
- Ability to work independently and as a team in a small office setting, be self-motivated, display superior time management skills, have attention to detail, willing to try new things, and the ability to meet deadlines;
- Problem-solving skills; ability to make decisions, sound judgment; and ability to develop and maintain a dynamic work plan, and meet fixed deadlines;
- Experience working outdoors in various terrains and under various weather conditions; and ability and skills to undertake physical tasks such as removing garbage and invasive species;
- Technical knowledge related to flora and fauna identification skills for PEI, and the ability to key out unknown species, as well as demonstrated experience conducting fieldwork;
- Motor boat training and experience, and knowledge of PEI waters a strong plus;
- Navigation experience with both map and compass and GPS; and experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) would be an asset;
- Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite);
- Fluency in English; bilingual in French a plus;
- Wilderness or Standard First Aid training;
Terms of Employment
This is a full-time, 26-week position with an anticipated start date of April 1st (start date is flexible). Salary is $18.50/hour. Position will be based in Charlottetown, PE, with travel throughout PE for fieldwork, with some weekend work. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
