Applied Restoration Ecologist (Intermediate)
Scope
SwampDonkey is looking for someone to join our growing team as a full-time Applied Restoration Ecologist. If you are an outside-the-box-thinker who can bring creativity and diligence to evaluating how and why vegetation responds to disturbances and restoration treatments, developing and testing novel restoration treatments and strategies, and developing new ideas to mitigate the impacts of new anthropogenic disturbances, then this position is for you!
The successful candidate will participate in a range of ongoing and new projects for existing and new clients. All projects currently focus on western Canadian boreal and mountain ecosystems, disturbance regimes, land uses, and management paradigms. Familiarity with those systems and paradigms is a benefit. The position includes a mix of office (most) and field (some) work. Office work will include literature reviews; protocol development and study design; data cleaning, management, and analyses; reporting and report preparation; and may include project development. Field work will include data collection, often in remote locations.
In this role you will participate in a range of activities and interact with clients, partners, and collaborators. This position is well suited for someone looking to spread their wings in the burgeoning field of restoration, and who is interested in identifying practical solutions for real world applications in conservation. SwampDonkey provides services to a range of clients from industry to governments to First Nations. The successful applicant should be excited to approach all projects with an open mind and an eagerness to learn new skills and perspectives.
In most cases, the successful candidate will enjoy “room to run” to explore new ideas, develop and test applied research questions, and write up results for submission to peer-reviewed and popular publications. This position will involve collaborative working relationships across specialities. The candidate can expect to participate in additional non-core tasks, such as analyses of wildlife habitat, as time allows.
Experience & Expectations
SwampDonkey expects the successful candidate to have a well-rounded knowledge base of terrestrial ecology. While this position focuses on vegetation and disturbance recovery, the successful candidate should be able to contextualize those topics within a broader understanding of forest ecology, fire ecology, and plant-animal relationships. Suitable candidates will be comfortable in both office and field settings and will have a demonstrated ability to engage with a variety of people and synthesize and translate science to practical conservation and management applications.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience working with a range of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and areas of expertise
- Demonstrated proficiency in data analysis, including an ability to identify and compete appropriate statistical tests
- Effective time management skills, self directed work planning, and reliable task completion
- Experience collecting vegetation and related data in the field (western boreal and mountain ecosystems preferred)
- Valid driver’s licence
Preferred Qualifications:
- MSc, with some previous professional experience
- Prior experience working closely with First Nations and Guardians in office and field settings
- Registered Professional designation for Biologist or Forester for AB and or BC
- Proficiency with GIS
Hours and working days are somewhat flexible, but on average, the position is full time (40 hours per week). The successful candidate is expected to provide their own home office equipped with the hard- and software required to complete job tasks.
Expenses, including lodging and per diem, are covered when in the field.
Please send a short cover letter and a CV (or like) that demonstrates your abilities and prior experience, and two – three references that can speak to the same to jesse@swampdonkeysolutions.ca with Applied Restoration Ecologist in the subject line. Position open until filled.
