Sharp-tailed Grouse Field Technician

Project Overview: The University of Regina in collaboration with the Government of Saskatchewan and SaskPower, is looking for three field technicians to assist in a Master’s research project on Sharp-tailed Grouse. The project will focus on conducting lek surveys in the Swift Current area to try and gauge the effects of habitat change and energy development on lekking site persistence as well as gathering data to better predict population trends of Sharp-tailed Grouse. Accommodation will be provided out of Swift Current or elsewhere in Saskatchewan if needed, along with a monthly food allowance for groceries.
Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of field technicians will be the conducting lek surveys in the early morning (1 hour before sunrise till 2 hours after) which will include the locating of previously surveyed lek sites as well as surveying for new leks. After which data will need to be entered into our sharp-tailed grouse database. Field technicians may be required to work independently, though will generally be working in teams of two. Due to the short lekking season field technicians should be prepared to work most mornings including weekends, though afternoons and evening will be open.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous field experience preferred but not required
- Valid Drivers License in Saskatchewan
- B.Sc. degree in biology or related fields, undergraduates encourage to apply if available for work term
