Position: Sustainability Intern
Organization: A local environmental organization part of the Sustainable Eastern Ontario Network (www.sustainableeasternontario.ca)
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Time Commitment: 30 hours/week for a minimum of 26 weeks.
Start Date: June or July 2021
SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION:
Sustainable Eastern Ontario is a network organization that fosters partnerships and collaborations on sustainability activities throughout Eastern Ontario by
– Connecting organizations together across the region;
– Collaborating on shared programs, activities, and funding;
– Capacity-building to enhance administration, communications, and fundraising;
– Celebrating stories of success and resilience
Through our network of over 135 environmental employers across the region, Sustainable Eastern Ontario will hire and place Sustainability Interns in local organizations.
SUMMARY OF ROLE:
The Sustainability Intern will work under the guidance of and be accountable to a Manager and/or Board of Directors. They will also work with a Mentor from another environmental group to help guide them in their role. The Sustainability Intern will develop programs, lead communications and social media, support partnerships, and participate in networking opportunities, including the National Capital Environmental Non-profit Network (NCENN). The sustainability Intern will take part in a mandatory 3-week intensive Training program in July as part of their role and an optional pre-employment Placement.
COMPENSATION
The Sustainability Intern will be paid $20/hour for the internship. Compensation is based on a stepped approach as follows:
– $15/hour for up to one month in a pre-employment Placement (if applicable).
– $18/hour for the initial internship period up to the end of the training program in July 2021.
– $20/hour for the remainder of the internship upon completion of the training.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Sustainability Intern duties are as follows:
– Serve as a member of and work in close cooperation with the Program Committee.
– Work with an Intern Mentor to support the role.
– Coordinate education & networking in Ottawa for environment and sustainability. Work with the Program Committee to finalize a Workplan and implement this Workplan over the internship.
– Coordinate communications through social media, website updates, and other communication strategies.
– Respond to general inquiries from the stakeholders and solicit interest and participation in the organization.
– Participate in monthly NCENN meetings and support content when applicable.
– Support the preparation of reports including key materials and photos.
– Attend the Intern Training Program and invest in learning and professional development through this program.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
– Committed to sustainability
– Knowledge and understanding of environmental issues
– Experience with environmental non-profit organizations preferred
– Proven capacity to communicate with and work effectively with others
– Experience with volunteer recruitment and support
– Experience with publicity, marketing, and event management
– Proven capacity to work in a self-directed manner, provide leadership to, and collaborate with others in a team situation
– Ability to organize a high volume of work, prioritize, and effectively handle spontaneous demands
– Must be a creative, energetic, flexible, motivated, and detail-oriented professional
– Meet the requirements of qualified interns as established by the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (see below)
QUALIFIED INTERNS ARE
– Post Secondary Graduate
– Between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship.
– Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada*.
– Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
– Available to work for at least six months.
– Not previous participants of a federal youth employment program.
– Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns, although this must be clearly indicated by the employer).
*Refugee protection must be conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Persons awaiting refugee status, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, student visa or work visa, are ineligible to participate in a Youth Employment Strategy initiative.
