Environmental Field Technician
The Ontario Aggregate Resources Corporation (TOARC) acts as the trustee of the Aggregate Resources Act and two of its responsibilities are data collection and publication of information on the aggregate industry and rehabilitation of abandoned aggregate properties across the Province of Ontario.
TOARC is seeking an ‘Environmental Field Technician’ to assist in the data collection for two of its publicly accessible databases, Surrendered Site Reporting and Mapping Tool and MAAP Online Reporting Tool (MORT). The Surrendered Sites Reporting and Mapping Tool is bridging communication and informational gaps between the aggregate industry and the public by communicating the end use/ rehabilitation of pits and quarries across Ontario. MORT allows the public access to geographic information and statuses on legacy pits and quarries across the Province while maintaining landowner privacy.
The primary focus of the work will be to locate former pits and quarries, legacy and surrendered, complete inventories of the sites and meet with landowners to discuss TOARC’s programs. The assessment may include conducting and documenting an inventory of the site including; a bio-inventory of existing vegetation, measurement of disturbed area, record of soil characteristics, photographic record, property sketch, GPS reading, licence and permit information, current land uses, and description of adjacent land use. The Environmental Field Technician will be responsible for updating the databases with all new information collected.
MAAP’s work is funded by the aggregate industry, paid for by producers, through a portion of the per tonne levy. To date approximately $9.4 million has been spent to make nearly 800 hectares of land safer, healthier and more productive, all at no cost to the landowner. Where sites qualify for the MAAP program and require rehabilitation the Environmental Field Technician will need to explain the MAAP program to the landowner including; TOARC’s mandate, the process of site selection, rehabilitation options, possible permitting requirements and rehabilitation restrictions.
The work will include contact with landowners, including ‘cold calling’ and will require EXTENSIVE travel on assignment throughout Ontario. The candidates, when not on field assignment will be centrally located in Burlington ON.
