Indigenous Conservation Technician Trainee

DURATION: April 10, 2023 – November 30, 2023
LOCATION: Toronto Zoo, Scarborough, Ontario

RATE OF PAY: $18.59 per hour

The Toronto Zoo is seeking candidates to fill one position for Indigenous Conservation Technician Trainee. The successful candidate will assist with the implementation of the Toronto Zoo’s Adopt-a-Pond’s Blanding’s Turtle Headstarting and Reintroduction project. The Indigenous Conservation Technician Trainee will be responsible for assisting with the release and field monitoring of Blanding’s Turtles in Rouge National Urban Park. The successful candidate will also be involved with other activities by sister programs in the Species Recovery Branch including Turtle Island Conservation and the Native Bat Conservation Program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Utilize opportunities to develop skills in the area of wetland conservation and programming. Assist in daily care, radio-tracking and monitoring of Species at Risk turtles
Assist with data entry and communications for the Toronto Zoo’s Ontario Turtle Tally, FrogWatch Ontario and Wetland Guardians citizen science monitoring programs
Assist with outreach education and distribution of educational materials to schools and communities; assist with organization and delivery of events at the Toronto Zoo, Rouge Urban National Park and other locations in the GTA
Assist with programming by sister programs Turtle Island Conservation and the Native Bat Conservation Program as needed
REQUIREMENTS

Experience related to Indigenous studies and/or biology, environmental science and education is strongly encouraged. Full G license is an asset. Please provide a resume outlining relevant experience.  Must register with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training (miziwebiik.com/) and meet their Targeted Wage Subsidy program requirements:

Must be Indigenous (Status or Non-Status, Métis, or Inuit)
Living in the GTA
At least 16 years old
