Planning Ecologist
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is currently accepting resumes for the permanent, full-time position of Planning Ecologist.
The Planning Ecologist will provide advice to the planning and regulations program for conservation authority permits, municipal plan input and review, environmental assessment, other environmental legislation and watershed planning.
Responsibilities
1. Provide professional advisory and technical support with respect to natural heritage review of permit applications concerning the regulations enacted under Section 28 of the Conservation Authorities Act, municipal plan input and review, environmental assessments, aggregate and municipal drain applications and other legislation.
2. Provide efficient service delivery and liaise with other departments, external agencies and the general public to ensure communication, information sharing and excellence in customer service. This includes pre-consultation with stakeholders, review of applications, site visits and responding to public inquiries.
3. Represent UTRCA as an expert witness in Court, UTRCA Board Hearings, or Tribunals where necessary.
4. Undertake field assessments using contemporary field methodologies to create a better knowledge of the ecology of the watershed.
5. Maintain electronic spreadsheets and databases of ecological information complete with a data dictionary to ensure information is readily accessible by all conservation authority staff.

Qualifications (Skill)
Education, (degree, diploma, certificates, licenses)
· Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university in an environmentally related field (i.e. ecology, biology, environmental studies).
· Certification in the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) and training in the Ecological Land Classification (ELC) System would be an asset.
· Valid Class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License required.
Experience
· At least 5 years’ experience in a biological field of work.
· Strong working knowledge of ecological principles, wetland form and function, identification of aquatic/terrestrial flora and fauna, wetland delineation, ecological land classification systems, mitigation and rehabilitation techniques and their practical applications to the natural heritage features of the watershed.
· Knowledge and experience with municipal planning, environmental planning, plan input and review, permit review, environmental impact assessment, Conservation Authority regulations and other relevant legislation.
· Possess strong collaboration, analytical, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
· Possess strong communication skills (written and verbal) to develop relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
Compensation and Other Information
$40.20 to $48.91 per hour – 35 hours per week

Start Date: as soon as possible
