Position: Forestry Crew Labourer (2 positions available)
Rate: $13.75 per hour
Status: Student

Location: Home base Simcoe but with extensive travel for work throughout Norfolk County
Note: Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays
Position Description:
Norfolk County Community Services Department, Parks, Facilities and Recreation Division, in partnership with public and private agencies and interests, are seeking individuals who are interested in working within the community of Norfolk County to promote conservation and proper resource management. These positions are funded by a variety of partners to expose local youth to the diversity of environmentally based career opportunities found across Norfolk.
The successful incumbent will:
- Assist in tree planting; urban tree/woodland inventory; stream restoration; electrofishing; invasive species control; nursery/trail maintenance
- Maintain daily activity log
- Operate a variety of equipment, light duty vehicles, machine and power and hand held tools, (i.e. brush hogs, hand held saws, weed eaters).
- Assist in the watering, pruning, planting, mulching, weeding, staking and de-staking and other maintenance of young trees on a scheduled basis for the Community Services Tree Planting Program and A.L.U.S. Program.
Qualifications:
- University education with a preference given to candidates that have completed a minimum of 1 year studies in Arboriculture, Horticulture , Environmental Studies/Sciences, Landscape Design/Architecture or Urban Forestry
- Understanding and entry level experience with the use of GPS / GIS technology and applications
- Must have Class G2 Driver’s License
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
- Good interpersonal skills
- Ability and willingness to work in varying climate conditions
- Able to lift 30 lbs to 50 lbs
- Excellent customer service and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
- Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision and follow all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
- Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
- Laboring duties include climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, handling materials in order to accomplish management objectives of Norfolk County and partner organizations. You will be required to work in an outdoor environment.
- Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term
- Computer expertise with preference given to students with knowledge of corporate standard software (Microsoft Office)
- Must have green patch CSA approved safety boots, 6” – 8” to cover ankle, suede or leather
- Must be currently enrolled in a post secondary education institution or institution of high learning on a full time basis and be returning to school full time at the next available term

- Chain Saw Safety Training
- Knowledge of Tree planting practices
- Knowledge of Common Restoration
- Forest Entomology / Forest Disease Identification
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
- Good time management, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
