Position Summary:
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is looking to add to their team, a Stewardship Communications Technician (contract position up to 20 months, conditional upon funding). The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to Watershed Health outreach activities through conferences, workshops, and various other forms of communication.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Encourage landowner uptake of stewardship and green infrastructure projects through mailings, workshops, media releases, social media, direct contact, and events; tasks include responding to applicant inquiries, coordinating and attending property site visits with relevant stewardship experts, maintaining landowner information in a database, organizing and making project overview presentations to applicable Grant Review Committees, and processing landowner reimbursements.
- Assist with the implementation of restoration projects to address water quality and natural heritage targets, and ensure they proceed to completion. This may include coordination of project design, project budget development, grant application development, acquisition of equipment and materials and scheduling and completion.
- Actively pursue and prepare relevant funding proposals to leverage stewardship project budgets in order to implement specific environmentally beneficial projects and provide appropriate reports regarding deliverables.
- Develop mailouts and media releases highlighting landowner activities related to habitat stewardship, encourage participation in environment-related community events and promote individual action to improve the environment.
- Create engaging social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) posts to increase public knowledge of agricultural stewardship practices, minimizing land impacts to rural water quality, and aquatic species at risk and their critical habitat.
- Assist with the organization and implementation of an agriculture-focused conference that highlights Best Management Practices (BMPs) to minimize impacts to water quality and watershed health.
- Assist with coordinating workshops to promote awareness regarding healthy soils, healthy watersheds, and agriculture BMPs that will improve watershed health. These workshops could include small, informal tailgate talks, tours, and/or workshops.
- Help prepare and organize meetings, workshops, and written material on the topic of phosphorus in the Sydenham River.
- Prepare necessary reports and updates that could include board reports, conservation updates, watershed report cards, etc.
- Coordinate and assist with education initiatives to promote protection and enhancement of environmental health (including tree-planting days, frogWatch events, First Nation fish monitoring events, etc.)
- Assist with the development and distribution of newsletters that describe recent research, current stewardship, and ways to get involved.
- Assist, when necessary, in updating the Sydenham River Watershed – Helping Species at Risk (SAR) dedicated website.
- Support partnerships, relationship building, and the establishment of venues for continued collaboration, and information and knowledge sharing to support recovery actions.
- Provide support to other projects as required (for example, may involve water quality monitoring and data analysis and reporting for various aquatic and terrestrial programs).
Credentials and Experience:
- Degree from a university in agriculture, communications, and/or related natural resources management discipline.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Takes initiative.
- Strong interpersonal skills that will lend well to interacting with other staff and maintaining good public relations with the agricultural community.
- Knowledge of Ontario’s agriculture industry, an asset.
- Proficient with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) related to data collection, storage, analysis, reporting, and presenting.
- Familiar with creative software such as Canva, Corel Video, and InDesign.
- Experience working with rural farming and non-farming landowners to negotiate and plan agricultural beneficial management practices and other conservation and rehabilitation measures an asset.
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class G Driver’s licence.
- First Aid Certification preferred.
Work Environment/Conditions:
Work Environment
- Work indoors and outdoors.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Traverse slopes and wade in watercourses.
- Working in the field in potentially adverse weather conditions (e.g., summer heat, cold water, poison ivy, exposure to mosquitos and ticks).
Work Pressure
- Some work repetition related to data entry and reviewing/interpreting data.
- Meeting deadlines for reports.
- Need to operate, maintain, and calibrate all monitoring equipment.
- Must organize and plan work efficiently to meet deadlines.
- Must handle concurrent demands and establish priorities.
- Must achieve accuracy and thoroughness in all aspects of work.
Additional Requirements
- Adequate home office space and equipment.
- Must have access to a personal computer, high-speed internet, and adequate bandwidth in the event that working from home is required.
- Ability to travel to various work sites.
- The SCRCA has established a Vaccination Policy for staff in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wage and Benefits
- Salary: $23.66 per hour
- Hours: 35 hours per week
- Enrollment in group benefits program after 6 months of continuous employment
